Morrison's Supermaket Offends A Muslim Customer

I would be very careful to feed my children anything that had been reduced from 85p to 19p.

But as the father said mistakes do happen

But what seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back was the fact that he was offered a bottle of Champagne as compensation, since Muslims don't drink????????

But anyway the manager didn't say her had to drink it, he could have sold it on.

But he was lucky to be offered any kind of compensation from Morrisons because on numerous occasions I have been charged incorrect prices on goods that have been labelled half price or buy one get one free etc,

Was I offered compensation for having to drive back to the store to obtain a refund? No instead I was forced to queue at customer services and then take part in cross questioning, then wait while a store worker checked out the offer on the self, before finally receiving the balance of cash back.

Surely Mr Khan there must be plenty of Muslim shops who would be sure to serve you and your family with Muslim acceptable food, but I don't know about being given a 66p discount on a 85p item.

The reduction shelf is a boon when feeding a family , hope they resolve it amicably, it should never have made the papers really.

Mr Khan had a perfectly legitimate complaint, which the store admits to having handled badly.

AOG - Was it worth driving back to the store to get the refund - i.e. petrol costs ?

That was my thought. if a deeply practicing muslim then surely it should be Halal any thing else would be as offensive as alcohol.

But of course alcohol is never offensive when they are selling it is it?

Double standards me thinks.

Only for the facts that this has reached the papers, wereas there must be a multitude of complaints issued against various supermarkets and these don't reach the papers, neither are they offered champagne compensations.

i bought a tart from morrisons, was supposed to be a £1 but the counter worker couldn't find the right code so she charged me 56p for an apple tart instead, i didn't complain but i would of if i realised i could of got a bottle on plonk

The store were clearly careless and stupid but Hey!

they didn't 'cause insult' - the people on the receiving end of the misguided offer CHOSE to be insulted

I can imagine a Vegetarian being annoyed that they were sold a meat product; and scathing that they were offered a piece of dead animal as compensation ... but feeling 'highly insulted'?

They're allowed to sell it in their shops, they can sell bacon, whatever the customer wants - they just don't partake of it. I don't see that point at all, YMB. My neighbour is vegetarian but she still feeds her child meat.

Regarding the reduced bin in Morrisons, we shop in there all the time. It's only reduced to 19p because the sell-by date is today or tomorrow, there's nothing the matter with it. This incident is clearly a case of mislabelling and the family were quite right to complain. Re the champagne - deeply insensitive of the store, but the family could have donated it to a worthy cause if they didn't want to kick up a fuss.

Muslim people don't have to shop only in Muslim shops - that's daft. Have a look at the packaging on stuff you normally buy (e.g. the KitKat in my hand at the moment) - if it's got Arabic writing on the back about ingredients, it's suitable for Muslims. Same as people who have allergies etc - they just have to be careful about what they purchase.

Some people cannot wait to be offended.

They LONG to be offended.

At the very slightest opportunity, they wave their arms in jubilation, and you can hear them cry ... "YES! Thank goodness, I have been offended today!"

If you do not pander to my every teeny whim, as if I am royalty or, more likely, some form of deity ... if you dare to lead a life that in any way whatsoever differs from my own ... then I shall leap on the opportunity to be offended.

The world is too full of people who spend their lives waiting to take offence over some pathetic, trivial nonsense.

And, frankly, people like that offend me. So I trust that they will offer me some compensation.

JJ, I agree with you overall but.... Mr Khan bought a pastry labelled as cheese and onion and it actually contained meat. That was the crux of his argument, the supermarket then compounded their error.

Mislabelling of food items isn't just about being offended, it can result in much uglier consequences.

Surely if your religion says that something is effectively a sin to partake of , then you should not be complicit in aiding people to commit that sinful act .

Afterall , you would like all mankind to convert to the muslim faith and be good muslims in order to inherit eternal life ( or whatever it is Muslims strive for or is promised to them )

Once again training or lack of rears it's head, when told that Mr Khan did not partake of alcohol - a canny manager would have immediately offered a gift voucher for the same amount, issue resolved.

It says in the article, too, that the lad bit into the pastry not realising that it wasn't the expected cheese. That isn't a sin - if a Muslim eats something by mistake, not realising it's haram, it's not the end of the world. It's the supermarket's response which is in appropriate.
