Blair was never a socialist and in fact their policies caused him problems in that they, having destroyed the British education system, meant he had to go to the extreme of converting to Catholicism in order for his son to go to the Brompton Oratory School, what a geezer! As to Euan, picking up so much so young can be a well-known poisoned chalice, I'm glad it didn't happen to me, I wish him luck.
shaney...this might explain the sour face :::
"Born in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, Skinner is the third of nine children of coal miner Edward Skinner, who was sacked after the 1926 general strike. Skinner himself worked as a miner for over 20 years, during which he became an NUM leader and Clay Cross Labour Party councillor "
I'm afraid he just hates Tories. We can hardly expect him to jump up smiling very time, now can we ?

Naomi...I suspect that you and I will hold opposing views on the merits of Comprehensive and Grammar schools, but the Tories had ample time and a whacking great majority under Thatcher and MMMMMajor to change the education system but didn't see the need. So, all water under the bridge and lets move on.
Anyway, all this brings us no nearer understanding baz's initial post. I still don't understand why Blair shouldn't buy a house for his son if he wants to, and I don't see why Euan shouldn't try to get elected anywhere in Britain, let alone a safe Labour seat ? Perhaps he will enlighten us later.

I do disagree that Euan should get a safe labour seat. More than a hint of suspicion that it amounts to Nepotism.
I hate this notion of preferred lists, actually. Would far rather see greater development of local representatives from the constituency than this parachuting in of party approved apparatachiks - and that happens with every political party.

I tend to agree with you LG about safe seats. But any change won't work unless all Parties agree to it. Dave was parachuted into the safe Tory seat of Witney in 1991, and when Boris is finally ready to ditch his Mayor's tophat, and come out fighting, you can bet your bottom dollar that he won't be trying for a seat in Merthyr Tydfil, or an inner-city Liverpool constituency.
"Not sure what it is you complaining about here baz ? Blair is a wealthy man and wants to give his son a nice home...so what ?"
must sit nicley with his socialist principles...if he even has any
no doubt tony will also be passing on all his knowledge to junior on how to avoid tax legally and take advantage of his own financial advisors
wonder if hes advising him on how to kill thousands based on lies and get away with it, could come in handy if his nice little safe seat that theyll make sure he gets leads to bigger things later in life !
At least generally speaking the tories make no bones about having a background and money, etc and aspiring to wealth etc etc
but most people are well aware of the politics of envy that labour tun into an art form...most of them are just stinking jealous hypocrites

Not such a simple task when the whole system has been changed and the grammar schools turned into tacky 6th form colleges. It was a sad day for bright working class children when the Labour government denied them a real chance in life.

mikey; you insist it is //too late in the day to start a new debate about Grammar Schools !// but I think that is perhaps because you are too young to have known how excellent they were, and how second-rate their replacements are. Socialists of course hated any form of excellence seeing it as elitism, but failed to recognise just what an important role they played in giving all young people a goal, something to work for and achieve.
The objective was not be equality per se, but equality of opportunity. If you want to see how far the UK has slipped behind the rest of the world in education just look up the figures.
Not only can 11 year old's exam papers from earlier in the 20th century not be passed by current pupils, in most cases they cannot be passed by present teachers!

Khandro, where did all the present surgeons, lawyers, scientists and the like, come from, educated under the comprehensive system, as anyone must have been years ago ?
In the past 'the goal' was set at about ten years old. It was to pass the 11+ . Those who failed to reach that goal went to secondary modern schools. Did those secondary moderns produce better results overall than the comprehensives ?

Mikey, no, it isn’t drivel. I’d be willing to bet that, unlike a dedicated grammar school student, you couldn’t have hoped for a place at, say, Oxford or Cambridge.
Krom, by what criteria, or experience, do you judge excellence? Labour transformed my school with its polished oak panelling and beautiful quadrangles from a dignified centre of learning into an emulsioned, scruffy, dirty, concrete covered sixth form college, complete with signs bearing the legend ‘No Spitting’, teaching a plethora of useless subjects. Where is the excellence? The Labour government, with its one size fits all mentality denied gifted children from poor families real opportunity – and in consequence they have wasted generations of brains - and if saying that makes me a snob, then so be it – but if you really think about it, I am rather more in favour of the progression of the working man than is the Labour party!
