I didn't think calling a black person coloured was racism?
Not sure what else the women said on the phone, but it seems very petty to me.

Also, £80 a week seems a lot for one person in her mid 70s!

'Coloured' has been a no no for at least twenty years - it lumps all non-whites in to one category.
Using the word 'coloured', to describe a non-white person, was an instant dismissal offence when I was in teaching.

We actually attended a staff training day where the two people in charge (both of Afro-Caribbean descent) told us that the ONLY word to describe 'non-whites' was 'black' and that it was to be used when referring to people of, say, Chinese origin.
Methinks there is more truth to Sainsburys version of events than the little inoffensive lady that she is trying to make us believe in..
Black as a generic term is stupid. Supposed to cover all who are not completely white. Even more insulting in my book.
"I agree with Barney" ...
there's seldom much point in trying to group people by colour. "Coloured" itself is far too wide and would have to include somebody mildly olive-skinned like me. Even "black" people come in a range from pale yellow-brown to dark blue-black.

Words like that suggest the only thing you can see about them is their skin and you can't even find the right word to describe it. Try going through life without them.
Thanks Dave. you want to marry me.. been waiting over 30 years to hear the other half say that!!
and yes,I too agree with Barney, a lot of things have clearly been left out by the Mail. For space reasons, I expect; they'd probably used up their daily allowance of pixels.
When I was at school in the 70's 'coloured' was taught to us as being the acceptable & correct way to address black children (although there were vey few in our school) but now it appears to be racist.

Funny how things change.
If I was Chinese or any Oriental person, or is that not PC, I would object to being referred to as black, as I obviously wouldn't be. Crikey, what a fuss!
Crikey, marje, you can't describe a person as 'Oriental'. Definitely non-pc
It's not racist to use the word 'coloured' to describe people of Afro-Caribbean descent. It just outdated, in the same way that half-caste to describe someone as mixed race is outdated and retarded is now no longer the word we use to describe people with mental handicaps or learning difficulties.

Daisy ninja - I can't believe that there are many who use the word 'black' to describe all non-white people. Even those with the most basic of educations must recognise that there are more than two races in the world (ie. black and white).
And yes Barney - totally agree. Something fishy about this story.

...but then again - elderly disabled woman, accusations of racism...what were the chances of the Daily Mail, performing due diligence on this story before spinning it for their readers?
In Africa mixed race are known as coloured
Don't fancy being a turtle sp.
Is anyone in the world actually White ? Even albinos are not white.
£80 a week ! What's she living on ? Rump steak three times a day !
She could have Meals on Wheels for half that amount.
Its unlikely that Sainsburys would ban this lady because of one uneducated remark. There has to be more to this than meets the eye. Also, its a DM article, so its highly probable that this has been skewed against common sense.
as you can see, it changes over time

Douglas Bader the air ace had a black labby called n+gger.

My difficulty is that I wouldnt call Obama - black..... (Muslim perhaps - 40% of Americans dont think he is Christian apparently)

Pakistanis dont like being called Indian and use 'Asian' which I always thought was Chinese.

O I addressed a Russian in Polish once - that was fun. I didnt get shot.
Maria - the fairyland child in Greece looked priddy white to be honest.
