M+S Profits Fall...yet Again.

It would seem that M+S has lost the touch of persuading women to buy clothes that they don't really need. Good news about food however...overpriced ready meals sales up. You would have thought that if people, mostly women, are not out buying clothes, they might be at home saving even more money by making their families evening meals, but it doesn't look like it !

I go straight to their 'indigo' range now....jeans,nice jumpers and shirts, lovely scarves...and parkas that are not shiney. I'm an 'older' lady-but I'd never buy any of the rest-except possibly their per una jeans...they fit. I buy some food there...but never, ever a ready meal.
M+S profits rise or fall by their ability to persuade women to buy clothes they don't need and probably don't want. Its not just M+S of course, but it is mainly about women. The profits don't come from selling ludicrously overpriced prepared vegetables or my underpants.
In essence of course, there are plenty of other clothing outlets available these days, rather than the 1960's and 1970's, when everybody shopped at Marks and Sparks. My underpants and socks come from Tesco these days and I don't have to wade through miles of bras and knickers to get to them either ! Much cheaper then M+S and just as good quality.
By the way, what ever happened to the St Michael signature, on the underpants label ?

One thing I remember about the M+S of old, is that they used to boast that nearly all their clothes were made in Britain, the rest coming from Israel.
My Mum worked in a M+S sewing factory back in the 70's, along with hundreds of others here in South Wales. They appeared to be good employers and enabled my Mum, and lots of other Mums to bring home some much needed extra income. My Dad had a M+S shirt for Xmas every year into the bargain !
