That may well be true of the law nowadays. In my young days, cannabis was available at lawyers' parties. Now, it is likely to be coke instead. The trick with them was to contrive an adjournment mid-morning. They could then retire and 'refresh' themselves. Otherwise, come 12.15, they were very tetchy and difficult to deal with. The same tactic worked in the afternoon too; they might make a show of "Is this really necessary?", to which the truthful answer would have been "No, but seize the chance", whereupon, satisfied, they did and peace was restored for the rest of the day.
