If I'd just had an idiot cyclist run into me when I had the right of way, I too might feel inclined to send out annoyed tweets. Serves her right for tweeting instead of reporting, but I wouldn't necessarily say that makes her at fault for the initial accident.

And doesn't the cyclist also have to report it?

Apparently not, jno. Road Traffic Act 1988 s. 170 as amended refers only to drivers of mechanically propelled vehicles and, intriguingly,specifically excludes drivers of invalid carriages too.

And the law on cyclists doesn't provide much protection. The Victorians had a statute, still in force, controlling "furious riding", which was construed as covering those wild riders of 'penny farthings', and not just horse riders, but it is rarely used

JNO - "She was cleared of a third charge of driving without due care and attention" - so presumably the whole incident was investigated.

No sympathy. The notion that she drove off does it for me - As does tweeting about it.

I think I had also read somewhere that she had declined to comment to the media immediately following the trial, citing an exclusive media agreement she had signed up to. I really do hope she is not going to profit from her stupidity.

You can try, AOG. I merely quoted from the Statute as it currently reads as amended, and which it is still in force. I know that the vehicles illustrated in your link no longer exist on our roads; I remember Stirling Moss leading the campaign against them. That does not exclude other vehicles from being within the definition "invalid carriage"

No sympathy but I guess at least she is acknowledging her stupidity. Her solicitor appeared on TV with her so he may waive her fee!

She knew she had hit the cyclist and should have stopped even if only to check he was OK & pull him out of the hedge and give him a lift home. No goodwill and unkind but she didn't even turn around later and go back. She could be a really nice girl but just not thinking. I do think it is extra upsetting for the cyclist to be left like that.

Most people care about people and you would feel terrible if you hit someone .
The Highways agency will no doubt use this as an example of what not to do so hopefully some good will come of it.

thanks for that, Blackiequine, yes, it must have been investigated.

My own guess is that she thought (as she says) the cyclist was at fault, checked he was still standing, and tweeted her irritation about him. This would have been unremarkable if it wasn't for the fact that she was supposed to report the accident formally, not just tweet. I rather suspect a lot of minor accidents don't get reported because nobody can see the point. The one where I was the victim wasn't reported, and it never bothered me.
