You mentioned National Service.
I agreed that some form of national service might not be a bad idea and then I asked for your ideas.
I want to hear your ideas - and would appreciate your feedback on the whole question of how it would work in conjunction with further education from someone who actually went through NT.
However, if you think I'm laying some kind of conversational trap, please feel free not to answer.

/// What ideas do you have on National Service? ///
aog
///Why do you ask? you most likely have your own thoughts on the subject, so I don't suppose you would take mine on board, even if I were to tell you.///
So none that would be persuasive or worth bothering with apparently
For once, aog is probably the right person to impose Quality Control

surely 'dysfunctional culture' is a contradiction in terms?
For instance, fundamentalist islam may be a 'culture' but it is clearly 'functional'
whereas people enacting afro-caribbean gang-related behaviour may be 'dysfunctional' but hardly constitute a 'culture' and certainly not one that respectable afro-caribbean people would recognise as such.
Perhaps we should drop the allusions to cultures and focus on the actual behaviours that the majority of people consider inappropriate?

Zeuhl, it is inappropriate cultures that are the problem. They don't fit with the prevailing culture, that is why most of us are shocked but not surprised.
Gang rape, throwing acid, forced marriage, murdering daughters, killing possessed children and female genital mutilation all originate in non-indigenous cultures.

So jomifl
if any group belief/behaviour set is a 'culture' in their own terms
how are those relevant to this case 'dysfunctional'
if we are considering afro-caribbean gang culture for example, they seem to be functioning quite properly and normally in their own terms
no evidence they are breaking down or finding it difficult to function properly - more's the pity

Yes
But they are not The Cultures
They are behaviours.
For starters they are not behaviours enacted or even approved of by the majority of people in those 'cultures'
And btw, the only acid attack I have personally witnessed was committed by, and against, indigenous British people.
So it is a dangerous generalisation to associate the two.
Our laws are very clear in prohibiting those behaviours.
Perpetrators from non indigenous cultures may make investigation and prosecution more challenging, but that should not be the issue.

"Gang rape, throwing acid, forced marriage, murdering daughters, killing possessed children and female genital mutilation all originate in non-indigenous cultures."
I think you're getting some things mixed up.
Are you saying that your examples are cultural norms for non-indigenous people? I would suggest that just about everything you've listed are illegal. It's like saying that a cultural norm in England is for people to rape babies, have sex with minors, and burn their children alive, just because of a few recent cases.
It's also like saying that culturally, the British are workshy and would rather lay about on the dole pumping out children rather than make something of themselves.
That's just stereotyping - and to be honest...it ain't true.
I'd suggest that your little list has as much value.

/are you saying that the practices that I listed were indigenous practices before the influx of ethnic minorities. They didn't happen when I was a kid./
Really?
What? Never?
are you suggesting jomifl that:
'Gang rape' never happened before post war immigration?
Wrong I think
'throwing acid' never happened before post war immigration?
Definitely incorrect
'forced marriage' never happened before post war immigration?
The English aristocracy weren't the only ones you know
'murdering daughters' never happened before post war immigration?
You've gotta be kidding!
'killing possessed children' never happened before post war immigration?
As long as there have been religious nuts of any kind I think you'll find
'female genital mutilation' I grant you. An abomination new to these shores (unlike male circumcision of course)
But FGM is still relatively uncommon in the UK
So let's not be distracted by supposed 'cultural correlations' and let's focus on the crimes regardless
