Yes he may have been a great man to those in South Africa, but he had no particular effect on my life and I would presume most others in this country, but when such words as "A very large light has gone out all over the word" are banded about isn't that going a little too far? The BBC for instance have wall to wall coverage on most of their radio stations as well as the main TV stations.
We have seen two tragic deaths in this country due to yesterdays terrible weather conditions but hardly a mention of them, in fact I noticed on Sky's rolling news strip at the bottom of the screen, mention of these two deaths just coming into view when they disappeared so as to get in more Nelson Mandela news.
No I think most of the mourning is a deep felt guilt to somehow excuse man's inhumanity to others during the apartheid days in South Africa and the fact that Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for a large amount of his life, in his and others attempt to change things.

It must be a great regret to Tora that he wasn't first on to post death of a terrorist
Although since Mandela once described himself as an unemployed pensioner with a criminal record we'd all take it in good sort
I think those comparing him to Margaret Thatcher miss the point of what he achieved.
Where she was stubborn and unyielding he was accommodating and compassionate
Because of this she failed to bring any end to Northern Ireland.
He managed to change power in an institutionally racist state without major bloodshed.
In historical terms she was top of the first division and he was premier league

RIP - and I hope he slipped away peacefully and without pain.
People may compare Mandela to Thatcher - but I think that's unfair. Two totally different politicians who both in their own way changed the lives of millions. However, Mandela is no where near as divisive a figure.
Anyone attempting to turn this into Left vs. Right (round two) needs to understand that Mandela was respected across the political spectrum.
For evidence of this, check the leader columns of the Telegraph, Mirror, Sun and Times.

Don't be shy to include the Daily Mail, you know they do these type of things much more better than most.

I have alot of South African friends and notice how all of them have always been in total support of Nelson Mandela. I also remember growing up in the 80s and being led to beleive how white South Africans were all supporters of apartheid - propaganda. Remember Spitting Image 'I've never met a nice South African'? that song charted.
