A little confusing this one, was it just the Mandela jokes, seeing that was what he was arrested for?

/// Mr Phillips was arrested at his home on September 10 and was taken to a police station where he was quizzed about the postings on the Rugeley Soap Box website. ///

Or was it because a certain councillor,

/// Liberal Democrat Councillor Tim Jones was so incensed by the one-liners, aired at a time when Mandela was critically ill, that he made an official complaint. He commented under one tasteless joke: 'Attacking a 94-year-old man who is probably dying. Does the far right have an ounce of human decency?' ///

wanted to attack the Far Right?

/// Mr Phillips admitted to once being a member of the far-right BNP, but quit 25 years ago. ///

Or was it even over some Miner's memorial?

/// Cllr Jones added that he was 'deeply disturbed' an unofficial Facebook poll over the memorial has allegedly been 'influenced' by the English Defence League. ///

Even if one is disgusted by 'bad taste' jokes, do you think that the police went a little over the top on this one?

But it all seems obvious to me that the councillor was out to get this joker no matter what.

We wont be able to make jokes about ANYTHING soon.
perhaps it was just too soon, who knows.
I suspect you have missed the point and posted are hoping for a BNP/EDL debate and PC gone mad etc.

There is a serious point here. It is over the top to have your DNA taken and be fingerprinted over a tweet. He has not done anything prosecutable but his biometric data has been taken. Why innocent people should have this information taken is a scandal.
the story is so garbled it's hard to figure out who did what. I have no idea who the councillor complained to. But I can't work up much sympathy for a man who posts images of decapitation on the internet - can you?

I find it best these days to cater for all, if I hadn't mentioned the BMP/EDL connection, I am sure some would have been falling over themselves to do so.

Spoiled your thunder did I Gromit?
If it had just been the off-colour jokes, I would have viewed is as being OTT.

However,
///He (Cllr Jones) then sent the Sunday Mercury - a Birmingham-based newspaper - screen grabs.

One was of a shocking image of decapitation, another featuring a wheelchair-bound individual, both posted by Mr Phillips.

He said: 'They are vile and deeply offensive, anti-Muslim, anti-disabled.'

So, perhaps it wasn't OTT after all?

"Local Councillor Tim Jones"

says it all really petty little PC bureacrat, councils are full of them
useless little jobsworth nobodys
as one of the comments says

"What kind of treatment did the people who said evil things about Thatcher get????????"

far worse was said about her

is it cos she isnt black !?
Do wonder what the police were really interested in. If the jokes were like the one published, there could not possibly be grounds for suspecting any offence. The interest in the computer suggests that the police were interested in far more than harmless jokes, but the joker, of course, is bound to present the interview as all about that.

I did not see these alleged images, but what about those nation wide news clips showing a Muslim with blood stained hands holding a meat cleaver after partially decapitating an off duty soldier, these were very offensive to me, should those who allowed those to be shown also endure what Mr Phillips was forced to?
'Gee, your bobbies are wonderful' said Martha from Illinois.

And not forgetting Lady Di and lots of Celebs that have passed away!

Couldn't have been anything untoward on his computer Fred.

*** He was bailed pending further enquiries. ***

*** 'When he answered bail on September 30, he was informed that there would be no further action based on CPS decision of there being insufficient evidence to support a prosecution. ***

Indeed, AOG, evidently there wasn't anything found but the police thought there might be something.

Oh come on I am really trying here.
Question Author
Obviously not trying hard enough, bare with, bare with.
Unfortunately, AOG, I only get a blank page when opening the link, so I shall remain in ignorance of what qualities and attributes I need to join that worthy body you term the rest of us; "worthy" because it must include you. Perhaps you would be so kind as to enlighten me ?
