There's a refinery just over the water in Essex, much industrial shipping already using that estuary and already weaving round the wind farms. Nobody in the local areas wants it. Madness.
the south east is picking up the tab for all the people who want to move out of the capital, or from other parts of the country, more jobs, better prospects, and to retire to, that is if they can't afford Spain or France.
Which means that more and more of villages are being turned into towns, with housing added on, and towns are stretching out to become cities.
Cambridge is now a place to settle in and not just for the students and faculty of the various colleges. Its expansion has been huge when you see what it was like a few years ago. Same for much of Hertfordshire, Essex, once sleepy pleasant villages now are just hubs for the commuters or second home wallahs, much has changed in the last twenty years, i find the same when visiting relatives, their little backwater is now full to brimming with incomers from overseas, i am being a little polite here.

I am not a gambling man but if I were, I would bet my last dollar on Heathrow being expanded. Nobody wants to go to bl00dy Gatwick and even less want to be bothered with Stansted or Luton. As for the enormous amount of money that a brand new airport would cost to build, even farther from the centre of Town than any of the existing ones...where is it going to come from ?
It was said on the Today program that by adding another runway or two onto Heathrow, the M4 and M25 would have to be pretty well closed for 5 years !
So maybe the real outcome is that nothing will be done at all !

this argument has been going on for years, and i wonder if that is all it will be. The business fraternity want it, as do the bosses at the airports, however the people who live around the areas must be wondering what this will do to their property if it comes around. Heathrow is a horrible airport, i actually prefer Gatwick.
Luton is a dump, airport and town, as to Stansted, no thanks.

Why does the Airports Commission not opt for expansion outside London.
Why not expand Birmingham and Liverpool Airports as most of the UK population live outside London anyway.
London is getting too big and is a bit of a nightmare commuting about the place.
Give Central and Northern England a fairer slice of the Cake, rather than drag most of the population down to London each time they wish to catch a Plane !!

surely this is designed for the worlds business community, not so much Joe and janet bloggs who go for two weeks to Spain, the bosses at Heathrow have been begging for a third runway for years, they say it's necessary for our future in commerce, competing on the worlds stage.
and the links to London are huge business wise, financial capital, and central for commerce, not Birmingham or Liverpool. Tourists who come to visit, usually come to the capital, they may visit other cities, those that have some historical significance, but they generally don't fly into Liverpool or Brum, but our two main airports.

redman41, Heathrow's basically full - an arrival every 50 seconds, I think it is. Birmingham and Liverpool aren't, so they could take more flights without expanding - if there was demand.
Living under one of the Heathrow flight paths, I'd welcome it. (We're out Wembley way, and many of them seem to use the arch as a landmark when in holding patterns.) But there seems to be no call for it.

There does seem to be capacity for growth at London Airports.

Re the cost of new runways etc. With all the sea we have around us why not go back to Flying Boats ?
