ChillDoubt, what 'legal action' do you think anyone could bring against the two newspapers, if the statement is not true or not generally true ? Can't think of one. It is not libellous; it is not going to "lower the person in the estimation of right thinking people", the classic definition of a libel or slander. (Note that the definition has "right thinking" not "right wing"; this story might well affect right wing people, and have prominence in the Telegraph and the Mail for that very reason !)

It's an interesting thought, ric.ror. The employer would not be entitled to say that they will not employ Muslims. However, a Muslim who 'signs up' to work in a job which involves working the checkouts and who only raises this particular objection once they are hired, has , in effect, taken the job by means of a silent deception, since the ordinary understanding of the job is that they will process the goods in the same way as others, including Muslims, do. A deception can be as much by silence as by express statement.

If the potential employee states that they have this objection before they are hired and the Company tries to insist that they work the checkouts whatever is on the belt, the Company would be at fault.

Honestly I find this whole thing quite bizarre. I have been retired from work now for 23 years & nothing like this ever happened in my working life. It strikes me more & more that we are living in a madhouse.

Er, that was my question. Why would Gromit doubt statements made by a spokesman that M&S had put their name to? The papers wouldn't make that up, which is why I was puzzled at Gromit's stance.

I have known cases where an observant Jew, acting for a defendant, had the case adjourned during a trial because he would not be home for religious observance. Nobody suggested that observant Jews were attacking the very fabric of our society or undermining the judicial system. The reason being explained, the judge adjourned the case without demur.

So what do you consider "our identity" to be? Britain is a country full of people who are multicultural anyway - those of us not descended from Germanic races are likely to be of Viking stock from invaders and settlers (they weren't welcome either), or Irish, or any number of original races. It's the nature of our country for thousands of years to be multicultural, there is (IMO) no single identity which is peculiarly British.

Believe it or not, I live in the real world too Baz. I see that the face of Britain has changed. I do not see that it was for the worst. I have all the freedoms you had, and probably more, really. It's sad that you are so paranoid, it really is, but stop do stop blaming me. I'm not letting anything happen. And besides, what could I do anyway? Stare at the undesirables until they cower and run away? More likely I'll just be able to live out my life doing what I want to do, and frankly we have a lot more freedom to do that than in the so-called golden age you seem to want to return to.

The world changes, and people like you who are so insular will be left behind if you keep banging on about "our world" getting destroyed.
