Chicago's population in the 1930s was about whalf what London's is now, so it would have been more alarming then. I suppose we just have to ascribe this to the perils of living in any big city. Sounds as if it was targeted, so no threat to the general public. But it's not quite what you'd want while having a discreet cocktail( if there is such a thing in a crowded club).
Prepared to bet you don't live in the capital. AOG, and probably never have. Those of us who do, or have, have become long enured to the fact that a city of 6 million seems more dangerous to strangers than to us, and that the capital is no more dangerous , as perceived by locals, than it ever was.
[Pause for someone to find an indignant local who says it is not safe to walk the streets any more; there's bound to be one quoted in one of the tabloids :)]

Killing by gun is very rare in the UK especially when compared to the United States.
// In 2011, the U.K. had 0.07 gun homicides for every 100,000 people; the U.S., by contrast, had 3 gun homicides for every 100,000. In 2009 there were 138 gun deaths in the U.K, where there are 6.7 firearms for every 100 people. //
We have some of the tightest gun laws in the world, but without outlawing ALL guns, there are bound to be some crimes committed with them.

Is our capital getting a more dangerous place.
No, it is getting safer.
// London was lauded today as “one of the safest cities on the planet” after the murder rate fell to a 42-year low.
A total of 99 people were murdered in the capital last year, with the lowest previous figure of recent years — 105 — recorded in 1970.
The new total includes six teenagers, compared to 15 in 2011. The number of gun murders also fell to six, compared to 14 the previous year, while knife murders dropped to 47 from 56. //

In possession of a crystal ball as well as rose tinted specs are we Fred?
Even so the public hangman would have been overstretched now if capital punishment was legal, never the less there wasn't as many murders taking place years ago in this country, never mind the capital, as there are now.

Crystal ball, AOG? If you mean do I claim to foretell the future, no I don't but I can use past experience and current evidence to make a reasoned deduction that London will remain as safe or become even safer than before.
If you mean do I have one to think you don't live in London and probably never have, no, but the way you write suggests that you don't and probably haven't.. Am I right?

um we have had this before
with all the usual suspects contributing.
No, it is not correct to say that London is less safe than it was
in fact over 30y it is safer
"the crime rate has halved since it peaked in 1995 and appears to be at its lowest level for more than 30 years. The official 2012 statistics show that all the main categories of crime recorded by the police fell, with violence down 6%, robbery down 13% and burglary down 9%. The murder rate also continued to fall in 2012, down 4% from 577 to 552 homicides. Knife crime fell by 16%, including a fall in the number or rapes involving a knife from 246 to 191.
AOG you are in the frip of a fallacy called ' recall bias'
- because you can recall more recent murders than say in the good old days of the Krays, you think there were, in fact.....
