on the increase, or simply a better, quicker diagnosis, the figures are quite frightening whichever way one looks at this.

I think that emmie was a bit hard on you,but your points were not lost on me.

Yes, we all have to die of something and the longer we live, the greater chance that we have of developing a dementia and also cancer.

You are correct, cancer is an emotive subject, carrying more kudos in sympathy that some of the more muscle wasting diseases and chronic liver and kidney disorders, engender.

One is " brave and loses ones's battle " with cancer, b ut one just dies of motor neurone disease.

Lazygun's ultimate paragraph say it all.
Zeuhl's right - cancer's mostly a disease of old age (not always); as we survive other illnesses that would have killed our grandparents (lack of knowledge, lack of antibiotics etc) we live longer and are more likely to get cancer.

you've reminded me...

some years ago my clients included Marie Curie and Motor Neurone Disease.

one week in particular i spent time with cancer researchers and patients involved in research so was very 'into' the cause.

the following week i interviewed a chap with Motor Neurone.

I'll never forget how at one point he looked me in the eye and said;

"I wish I had cancer"
Zeuhl,,,;-(
More people diagnosed = Good
