Justin Bieber Oand Other Rants!
How is it that some young singer makes the second items on the BBC news? The only people interested in this idiot would be about 14 or under and wouldn't watch the news at all. Another piece of news from the US - a country, most of which, have no idea what the name of our Prime Minister is? Why does the BBC give air time to rubbish like this? considering there was absolutely no mention of the Womens cricket in Australia, who are it seems, are so much better than the mens cricket team who obviously got a mention!!! Rant over for the time being.

I think you'll find it on the front page of the sky news website too!
It sounds to me as if your objection is basically because you personally have no interest in Justin Beiber
I'm guessing here but I doubt you'd have posted that if had been say Bruce Forsyth thrown into jail for driving under the influence.
So it's not so much the inclusion of celebrity news you're objecting too as the particular celebrity.
In this case it's particularly news-worthy because of his clean cut image.
Keith Richards staggering around streets drunk is hardly news - Cliff Richard would be!

// short of an obituary notice there's no such thing as bad publicity.//

Its all to do with the public's obsession with trivia. This obsession is largely generated and led by worlds Media, of which the BBC is only a part. Its what dumbing down is all about I'm afraid. Even The Guardian, the paper that I have been reading all my adult life is going the same way.
Not sure what we can do about, other than to ignore it the best we can.
Andy Warhol was right all along.

"Celebrity news" goes on all the time, seems todays society or most of it anyway feeds off of it, I think social web sites breed this fascination too. I don't agree with it but it looks like we are stuck with how things are. Guess the answer is only look at or read the serious producers...though at one time the BBC was I thought. IMO yet another decline in society today but that is just my way of looking at it.

As I said
//So it's not so much the inclusion of celebrity news you're objecting too as the particular celebrity.//
How you rate the 'value' of a celebrity is a personal thing
You obviously rate 'staying power'
Others might suggest that such 'Old timers ought to have bowed out gracefully when they still had tallent'
Personally I can't recall anything Bruce Forsythe has ever said or done that entertained me for half a second - but I'm perfectly willing to accept that others like him
You see - I'm willing to accomodate other people's values and opinions
Isn't that what this thread is really about?
Understanding that other people's opinions as to what qualifies as news has value?
Understanding that not everybody has to see things the same as you do?

I cannot stand this young man's music, voice, styling or attitude.
However, to call him a 'nobody' is a little off the mark. You may as well call Lady Gaga or One Direction 'nobodies'. All three acts have a similar imprint. They have all reached crazy levels of fame in a relatively short space of time.
Like Gaga and 1D, it would be odd to think of Justin Bieber as a 'nobody'.

AOG - "Comparing a pop singer who was unknown 5 years ago to a multi talented celebrity such as Bruce Forsyth who's show business career spans 75 years is just plain ridiculous."
I would take issue with the 'multi-talented' label you have attached to Sir Bruce - he sings, dances, plays the piano, tells jokes, and hosts Strictly Come Dancing, but on recent evidence, he is not really particularly 'talented' at any of these things.
