Poor Animal And Damn Zoos!
Why, why why? They were offered a home for this poor giraffe but they still destroyed it despite protests and people trying to find a new home for it! This is why IMO zoos should not exist, what care do they give for animals in this sort of instance, it's appalling the destruction of a life that should not have been held in captivity anyway...b'stards!

The fact is that that zoo is part of the European Conservation and that giraffe was not suitable for breeding anywhere in Europe. The zoo in Yorkshire that offered to home it already had his brother, so that would not be suitable either.
Animals cost an awful lot of money in feed and vets bills and this giraffe had no useful purpose to the conservation project.
In the wild giraffes are common prey for lions and tigers. I see nothing wrong here. Look at all the culling in the UK - the dartmoor ponies, the wild deer herds etc are all managed to ensure the herds stay healthy. Management includes culling.
Male calves are slaughtered here in the UK because they are no use to a dairy herd and the cows have to keep getting pregnant to ensure our milk supply.
Six lions have very recently been culled in a UK safari park because there were too many of them and they became violent towards each other.

Where's the outrage about that?

I still feel the (some) very good argumnts here in support of culling and the cutesy factor are missing the point. There may well be very valid reasons this giraffe should not stay as part of the group in Copenhagen however there was absolutely no reason for it not to be given to those willing to take it elsewher. It was hardly going to breed with its brother in Yorkshire........
Hc I didn't know bout longleat being as cruel as the Danish zoo until boo put the link up. I drew attention to the Danish one because that's what I'd read. Yes DT I agree, a few culled humans would be good especially as you say, the ones culling the animals! Wild Animals should be just that in the wild and let nature take its course...without humans being involved, that's my take on life on this planet, humans are the problems here for most part IMO.
Hc and that is exactly why I do not agree with zoo's or animal "wildlife parks"! As for unfeeling cruel owners of domestic animals who abandon animals (and worse), believe me I get even more incensed with that because they should know better and if they can't afford or don't want an animal then they shouldn't have one in the first place.
Though I have some sympathy with your arguments, mrs o and others, they shouldn't have shouted this from the roof - and to do it how they did and involve children in having a live anatomy lesson was unbelievably crass.
And there I thought that the Danes were reasonably sane as a nation.
Nice to see you back on, mrs O........x

the Longleat lions had serious genetic defects

Makes me wonder... if you were pregnant and it turned out the foetus had serious genetic defects, what would you do?
