I would have liked Cameron and his predecessors to have taken notice of the warnings given to them years ago by the experts employed to predict what would happen when/if weather like this hit us. They turned a blind eye and continued with their penny pinching cuts.....leaving us in this predicament.
Even now they are insisting on cuts within the EA and will this change their minds?...I very much doubt it.
Lilac...I am not arguing with you....quite the reverse. I am as angry as you at the way in which the SW was ignored for weeks on end. I would like no one to be having to wade through filthy water no matter how shallow.
I have a family member who worked on flood risk and management in your area......she became so frustrated by the way that so much of the work she and her colleagues were doing was dismissed as scaremongering she moved on to where she could at least have her work taken seriously and where she could make a difference.
Out of interest....for how long were the people of Somerset enduring floods before the army was sent in to help?

well, it would seem to make sense to me for the army to fill sand bags in a place that needs it that's NOT already being done (ie the place where your relatives were) Gness. i was complaining about the people who are on hte telly saying "they government should do something" not that they were saying "the government SHOULD HAVE done something"
Ok. This is where I put my neck on the line and upset LOADS of people!
I work in local government as an Emergency Planning Officer, and flooding in my area comes under me. I feel therefore, that I am fairly qualified to put forward several questions and "comments". For info, I hate politics, and have the same poor views of all political parties! Also, most of this is directed at homeowners, and not the poor farmers whose livelihoods are currently underwater.
1. This flooding is caused by nature, and not by any one person or group.
2. No one could have predicted that the foul weather would have gone on so long and cause so many problems.
3. As for saying that the government, Environment Agency, local council etc should have done something to prevent it, no one I know is genuinely pshycic
4. Water is water, and can only be redirected to flow where you want it to go, to a point. Even King Midas had problems.
5. We live in a "blame someone else" society. If you buy a property that has the possibility of flooding, either dont buy it, or buy it along with proper flood protection items.
6. If you could see the size of flood plans, it would take a week to read them!
7. Sandbags are basically useless, unless you fill and stack them correctly. To be of any use, you are looking at a minimum of 12 to properly fill one front door.
8. Dont keep blaming the fire brigade, police, environment agency, army, etc. we all know about how their numbers have been cut in recent years. There isnt a cupboard that we can open and pull out more as we need them.
9.Everyone wants to blame everyone else. No one wants a nanny state, but on the otherhand, many want someone else to fix their problems. Make your minds up!
10. (And last) unless you build a massive wall around the whole of the UK, we have to expect that the sea will come over sometimes, and that tidal river levels will go up and down. Question then is what do you do with the rain that falls from the sky?
Rant done. Now to wait for the onslaught of abuse!

peachybabe, What you say is very correct. Thankyou. but the reason I was getting so annoyed is the fact people down here have had to put up with this for weeks but as soon as Windsor gets a couple of inches of water they demand help.?
gness , when ever you see the area on tv I have not seen any army present since last weekend when they showed them stood by the side of a road. But that is not saying there are not there now.

Many thanks flump we are fine where we are. The roads going into the next town is blocked by floods. And it is terrible weather tonight again so expect more flooding in the days to come. The flooding has spread into other areas now.
Not sure if anyone saw the One Show tonight ?? seems we are forgotten.
