Not quiet the same as standing up and saying what you like on a street corner. We are incredibily tolerant in this country how dare you put this down as some sort of curtailment of freedom.
I used those particular words in the title because these men have been banned from promoting Sharia law, not from harassing people for which they rightly received custodial sentences.
To my mind promoting means leaflet drops, newspaper ads, peaceful speech making in public places and should exclude all forms of harassment, intimidation and rabble rousing.

There are a regular band of preachers in my town centre, some preach hellfire and damnation to non-repenters, others preach the mercies of forgiveness and tell us to 'turn the other cheek'.
I am very proud that my country recognises nearly all religions and most people have the right to practice their faith or none at all.
Freedom of speech is a democratic right which is one of the most valuable assets a person has. This right is tempered by laws but on the whole I and everyone else can say what we think. I can stand on a soapbox in my town centre and state 'I believe only Vegetable is the one and only true religion and Cabbage is the only God'. I can't follow that by stating followers of all other religions should be killed.

hc, i don't think that many adherents to Islam feel that tolerance of others religions, whilst Christianity in Britain has been slow on the uptake to modernise, they are doing so at a push. Seeing as how Islam now comes only second to Christianity and that has happened at a startling rate, should make some sit up and take note, they won't of course.
