Collapse Of Ira Man Trial
The trial of the alledged Hyde Park bomber was halted after his defence revealed a letter from the police that promised he would never face criminal charges for the attack.
// On Tuesday, a judge at the Old Bailey in London halted the case because Mr Downey had a letter from the Northern Ireland Office dated from 2007, assuring him that he would not face criminal charges despite the fact that police in Northern Ireland knew he was still wanted by Scotland Yard. //

Am I right to assume that no one in Government or the police will be punished for this terrible decission? Can we look farward to some faceless spokesperson saying "lessons have been learnt" when we all know they haven't?

Yes, a consequence of the preposterous "Good Friday Agreement". Get-Out-of-Jail Free cards for murderers and places in government for their leaders.
I have frequently suggested that this agreement was a betrayal of justice for the families of those murdered over the years by Republican terrorists but have often been accused of failing to see "the bigger picture". This bigger picture has seen the capitulation by the Agreement's architects to terrorism in the UK. Peter Robinson's threat to resign is based, he says, on the fact that he was in ignorance of the fact that an amnesty had been granted for so many murderers. He must have been on holiday when the Agreement was drafted and signed.
