The papers today carry a story of a 'genius' spycatcher who infiltrated nazi sympathisers during the war. The story is interesting, as is its conclusion.

The sympathisers came from the aristocrisy and the establishment. And none of the traitors were ever prosecuted for helping the enemy, they remained free.

Your own link suggests it was public opinion which went against the British Union of Fascists. Before that, it was Daily Mail support which led to its rise. Rothemere's decision was commercially motivated. Many companies withdrew advertising because it was supporting anti-Semitism. When the Daily Mail stop supporting it, it declined.

But since you did, I then also entered proof that the Daily Mail caused the break-up of the BUF, by withdrawing their support, which funny enough you chose to ignore.

I think you will find that there were many who supported the new party that he formed, it was later that the BUF quickly developed the appearance of a major political party, with a membership of 40,000, but by 1934 its progress was hindered by the withdrawal of respectable support such as the Rothermere press,

But do you know why they had such an issue with Jewish people?

Were there any other groups they had an issue with, or was it just the Jews?

You see, the point I was making about 'times change, but things remain the same' is that we have a couple of far right groups, who use exactly the same rhetoric, but rather than Jews, it's Muslims.

sp1814, very briefly, Jews were seen as a scapegoat for the country's ills (and Germany's), as other foreigners are now. Historically they were money-lenders (because Christians were forbidden to do this), and nobody likes money-lenders. It was assumed that they were like bankers now, rolling in money squeezed out of the indigenous poor. It was also assumed they were unpatriotic, only loyal to themselves and other Jews - "rootless sosmopolitans".

All guff, but scapegoats are always useful in troubled times.
