"Are you saying that the western media (who keep repeating this claim) have all had the wool pulled over their eyes by Russian disinformation? "
Well, I'm not sure that that is actually claimed by most media here. It's true that there are different outlooks - Ukraine is a huge country and the people in Uzhgorod to the far west have a lafgely different outlook from those in, say, Luhansk in the far east. But then, compare the outlook of a Shetland Islander to a Surrey stockbroker. It doesn't mean that they don't want to be part of Ukraine. Oddly, it's only since the Russian invasion of Crimea that trouble has flared in places like Donetsk, NOT before. Quite why this is happening now I'm not quite sure. Whether it is simply the overwhelming Russian media coverage that people would watch there, or whether it is, as some suggest, that there are actually Russians coming across the border I am not sure. But for example look at Shakhtar Donetsk football fans: you will only see Ukrainian flags (and plenty of them) at their games, never Russian ones.
It's only really Crimea where there is a significant number of people who would claim to want to be part of Russia, After all, they used to be.
