Apparently even Tebbit has suggested that she resign. I realise that the whiff of brimstone doesn't have quite the effect it used to have, but I'm sure his opinion still has some weight attached to it. Never thought I would agree with the Chingford Skinhead but I can't quite see how dave is being helped in his task to get ahead of Labour in time for next years Election, until he lances this boil once and for all. I also understand, from what somebody was saying in the barbers this morning, that the DM have called for her to go.

Surely this can't go on ?

@goxtops I think that is undoubtedly a contributory factor. Had she shown true contrition, rather than barely veiled contempt, and issued a genuine apology rather than a barely veiled critique of the allegations against her she may well have elicited more sympathy.

Right now, public opinion seems very much against her. Whether she can ride out the storm or not rather depends on how much DC and the strategists wish to keep her. Certainly there are influential voices within the Conservative Party who wish to see her gone.
Out now!
just one, but suggest lots of others, if they deal with these matters in house, how is ever going to get clean

Maybe the Panel, as well as Maria Miller, should resign.
I think the panel should bow to the inevitable and allow a truly independent regulator to rule on such matters, not a committee of MPs. That is what the public thought they were getting when IPSA were set up, I think.
LG, that's what someone on the radio said - you can't have MPs judging each other's pecadillos.
Jacqui Smith seems to have been punished quite substantially - now a radio show host. I look forward to Miller taking over from Susannah Reid.
how many more, and Jaqui Smith was once Home Secretary so you would hope that she had some standing, moral fibre, not fibbing about your expenses, or actively cheating the taxpayers.
Sack all the bent M.P.s , no wait a moment , there will be none left, just settle for this corrupt woman and get a system in place where M.P.s do not vet one another.
case of last man out shut off the lights, and close the door
the worst aspect for me was the thinly veiled threats from no10, re press regulation, if the paper dared to run the story. what a quandary for some abers.
the very thought of a Tory being a greedy thug is a quandary for some ABers but we will have to live with it.
some for some supporters of Labour who can't get over the fact that many in their party no longer wear cloth caps and race whippets.

Interesting posts guys...thanks !

I am trying not to make a party political point of this ( well, wonders will never cease, I hear you all cry ! ) but chancers like Miller appear in all Parties, of whatever colour. She isn't the first one to try to get away with some fraud and she certainly won't be the last.

But dave needs to get a grip here, as he is being seen as weak and ineffectual over this affair. As I have said, he is behind in the Polls and needs to show he has some b*lls. MP's like Miller are two-a-penny, and there are plenty of others that can take her place and do the job. Any comments that I can make about IDS is not postable here on AB, even with asterixis !

He should sack her, face up to 24 hours of flack in the Media and then move on. We will all think better of him for it.
I must have got that the wrong way round. I wear whippets and race cloth caps....
LG off to the animal rights brigade, and clothing manufacturers do gooders, for mistreatment of their respective charges
If I'd overcharged on my expenses to the same amount at work, I'd be sacked...full stop.

Well, theoretically, I'd be sacked. In the real world, I'm pretty much unsackable - black and gay.

If I were in a wheelchair, I would have a job for life, no question.
I could help you out there, sp. ;o)
that's because you don't have a sympathetic workers' committee adjudicating on expenses claims, sp1814. Set one up right now...
We might as well get rid of the Parliamentary Standards Committee then if a bunch of MP's can just overrule it. And why don't the lay members have a vote?
