That goes without saying, Pixie. I cannot fathom how some people lack such self control that they can hurt a child.

Anne - alcohol abuse and the abuse of wife/husband/children has gone hand in hand for a long time. Just look at 'Gin alley'

drug abuse,
Drugs have been around quite a long time as well. It's the media....we just didn't hear about it before.
No better figures, no worse. Doesn't really help though.

Until we get tougher on druggies, alcoholics (same thing really) and abusers it will continue to happen.
Yes another tragic loss of a young life, but it appears there is another case in Blackpool, but fortunately this time the little child is not in a serious condition.

/// A one-year-old child was also admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on Thursday with bruising, where she was assessed. She is not in a serious condition. ///

There are some on AB who believe this type of thing has always happened and we only hear about it nowadays because it is reported more, but I say to them "utter rubbish", why don't they admit that we now live in a much more violent society than we once did, and before anyone quotes the 2nd world war don't bother, you know what I mean.

Like I have often said today such cases as the infamous Dr Crippen's would not have even reached today's front pages.

AOG - I am inclined to agree that responsibility is far less of a premium now that it was in years gone by.

It would be wonderful to think that all babies are conceived in love and with planning and a sense of responsibility, but increasingly that is simply not the case - and the cases of drug abuse leading to cruelty and death are increasing.

So very very sad, poor little mite.
Question Author
again not relating to 'this case' but there are many more drug abusers/addicts in our communities, who may or may not be known to social services. it has always been the ethos of social work departments ( child care )to allow babies /children to stay with parents with supervision. which imo in some cases is not working, how many recent cases have we seen where the baby/child were known to various agencies. and at the inquests. we are told '' lessons will be learned ''. well I don't think they are.!
""There are some on AB who believe this type of thing has always happened and we only hear about it nowadays because it is reported more, but I say to them "utter rubbish", why don't they admit that we now live in a much more violent society than we once did, and before anyone quotes the 2nd world war don't bother, you know what I mean.""

Totally agree with you AOG! As for alcohol and drug abuse then and now, of course it went on but not so prolific and destructive especially on the younger generation then as people did just not have the money to buy "stuff" like they do now, especially as a lot of crime goes on to pay for their habits!

Poor, poor child and all other children who have had to suffer at the hands of those who should love and protect them and make them feel safe.
Regarding drug abuse, totally agree it has always taken place, but it wasn't so prolific in this country as unfortunately it is today.

Just like gangsters that we saw in 1930s USA apart from the Kray twins etc, we saw very little of them as we do today.

But getting back to the drug problem I always remember seeing a Frank Sinatra film back in 1956 called 'The Man With The Golden Arm' and thought at the time, thank goodness we don't have that type of thing over here, if only I knew then?
The statistics don't agree with you, aog. The report does say the figures are the same "but the public is unaware of this". So, likely better information and communication. Plus nowadays people are more likely to be caught than have it assumed to be an accident. Society in the long run is very gradually becoming less violent as a whole, but there are individuals who are evil.
...and i don't know what your point is about the second World War.
\\\\The statistics don't agree with you, aog. \\\

Could you help with a link pixie, as i have tried to Google the deaths caused by parents pre 1960 against todays figures, but can't find them.

I must say that i agree with AOG.....a murdered baby in the community would have been investigated and reported. We did have newspapers and the wireless.
pixie373

Don't take too much notice of statistics regarding crime figures, aren't the police under criticism for doctoring the crime figures.

/// ...and i don't know what your point is about the second World War. ///

I would have thought that that was obvious, taking into account that I put it after "why don't they admit that we now live in a much more violent society than we once did"

Knowing the mind set of some ABers they would soon have come out with "don't you think that WW2 was violent then".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_crimes_in_the_United_Kingdom#Child_Killers.2FKillings

According to this under Major child killings there were;

!800s 2
!950s 2
1960s 2
1970s 1
1980s 1
1990s 4
2000s 27
aog, I think the only thing that comes out of those figures is that these days we are far more likely to find out about these crimes and hopefully the culprits.

The world has always had the sick people, I really dont think much has changed, we are just much more aware of things thanks to the media.
RATTER15

Didn't you know that we actually had TVs, Cinemas, Wirelesses, and Newspapers even in the 50s?

We also hanged murders so I am sure we would have been made aware of these hangings.
Question Author
no, no, its fairly recently that we have had such a large amount of parents/guardians who are alcoholic/drug addicts who severely damage or murder/abuse their children, and it is because these babies/children are being left in the parents care , with or without supervision, how stats from the 60's are similar to now I fail to understand ?
My mother and her siblings were battered within an inch of their lives. No parent would get away with that nowadays.

So, AOG, please don't tell me it's worse today than it was in the past. So many different types of abuse were swept under the carpet.

Laws don't change for no reason!!!
Children are being killed by their parents, step parents, boyfriends of the mums all the time and yet when a dog kills a child (usually owned by an irresponsible adult) there's a massive hue and cry and all dogs MUST be muzzled and all dogs are dangerous blah, blah, blah and yet more children are killed by humans who should, but don't know better!! I know who I'd rather trust!
Question Author
viv, that is a very valid point.
