/// I think you have hit on a point that has thus far not been considered...old people are less 'elderly' than elderly people in the past...through better nutrition, less people smoking, healthier lifesytles. ///
Perhaps the Government should stop financing all these costly TV health commercials?
so you hired the help, what you suggested was the sick, dementia, alzheimers family member can be cared for at home, if you had a full time nurse, i might agree with you, as i said its not good if you have a full time job, and a family as well -
/// The first minister to seek immigrants from the Caribbean was
ta-daaa
Enoch Powell. ///
That gives the impression that Enoch Powell was responsible for bringing the first immigrants from the Caribbean to this country, but it’s a false impression. The first immigrants from the Caribbean came here in 1948 – two years before Powell was elected to parliament.

a relative has a dad in care, 500 quid a week currently, its still a lot, and she is a home owner. they have home, mortgage, both work full time and have young children
Well It seems to have become and unintended immigration debate. SP yes I agree we would need ecourage families to look after their elderly relatives like immigrants tend to and, you are correct, we did also a generation or 2 ago. I'd like to see a proliferation of granny flats etc but the main problem is that most youngsters have little chance of getting on the housing ladder. I have a couple of kids that see it as impossible to buy a house when ironically they are paying more in rent than I pay for my mortgage! Sad but true, I guess the way forward is for us to give the house to the kids in exchange for care and a granny flat! It depends on the case though, I know a couple of 80+ guys that are pretty fit and would not need much care but on the other side there are those that need 24 hour care so it depends on individual circumstances. If I remain compus mentis I'd rather stay with family when I'm old (older!)
how does anyone know that immigrants tend to their elderly. Have them at home, and even if many do, is it because the wife doesn't work - or they have many children so they can share the costs, and care of the parent
granny flats, where, tacked onto the family home, what make you think that if the person was well enough for the time being they want to move and be in a granny flat.
We can cope with an aging population the same way as we presently could cope with a load of able bodied folk out of work. It is always the case that the costs of society need to be covered by the taxes on those working to create wealth. This need not, and possibly can not, rely of 100% employment, it's just a case of being competent enough to ensure sufficient wealth creation by those employed cover the costs of society. No one needs to push the issue further into the future by overcrowding this country further though. We need to abandon supporting such short sighted so called solutions.
