Just to be clear, our exposure isn't really gas, though there could be a price hike if Putin was to turn the tap off, we take some 5 to 15% per quarter from Europe and yes, there is an element of Russian mixed in that. Steam coal though, yes, some 25% of our imports are Russian.

However, why would Putin want to do turn the energy taps off? - he desperately needs the forex and the Russian economy is up the proverbial creek with not much of a paddle going forward - indeed this testerone-fueled posturing by him and his minions is thought by many to be a diversionary tactic to keep his people onside politically.....and buqqer the Ukranians.

With the fall of communism and the collapse of the Soviet Empire, a deal was done which said the EU and NATO would not creep to Russia's back door. Reagan, Gorby and Thatcher agreed Russia would let the wall fall, but western Europe would not take advantage. The ex-Eastern Bloc countries gradually were granted membership of the EU and the west were indeed at Russia's back door.

Ukraine was probably the final straw as it borders Russia, has a large Russian population but is also strategically more important being Russia's breadbasket and a supplyline for exports of Russian energy to the west.
