Mikey...I gave this a great deal of thought at the time and while it's probably not something I would have done were I a surgeon I don't think it warrants losing a transplant surgeon...especially a good one.
I have had far too much to do with surgeons over the years and have generally found the ones with humour, often black humour, are the ones I have had the greatest trust in.
There's a hell of a lot hanging on the transplantation of an organ...a bit of light relief can't go amiss.
I recall our first meeting of patients awaiting transplant with the kidney surgeon.
He introduced himself as a plumber who was going to do a good plumbing job....it was really that simple....he said...and that was all he got the chance to say.
A patient stood up and ripped him apart for mocking the patients.....likening them to washing machines!
I thought he was putting us at our ease....but heyho....☺
