He is "finished" in the UK as it is extremely unlikely that he will get another job as transplant surgeons in training are lining up for a Consultant's post.

Sqad, I think it is all a complete disgrace and suspect this incident was used to get rid of him for something quite different...was he considered PC ? or were there in-house conflicts of personality , or simple professional competitiveness/jealousy ?

I've no inside information on this but it was discovered when the patient was opened up again. The initials would have been seen by not only the second surgeon, but his junior staff, the scrub nurse, the anaesthetist, and maybe others in the theatre at the time.
As lasering one's initials on a liver contravenes at least four of the General Medical Council's "Duties of a Doctor", they would have been under an obligation to report it, and would have been censured had they not done so - and might even been accused of conspiring to cover up.
