Sikhs and Muslims have a volatile relationship.....it is a) cultural, b) religious and c) there is a great deal of ill-will on both sides over disputed territory in North India/Pakistan.....
It is a vile and despicable thing to have happened but, taken in the historical context of hostilities between the two, it is not a 'multi-cultural' problem in the same way as the issues you have recently been highlighting.

AOG - it appears that you are stretching circumstances to fit your ethos that multi-culturalism does not work.
All it needs for this situation to take place is for one Muslim man to appear to be connected to one Sikh woman, and for one other Sikh man to act in a way which he believes reflects the tenets of his faith.
How that fits in with 'the Multi-Cultural Dream' is frankly beyond me.
If a white British man mutiltes is daughter-in-law because he believes she is having an affair with a Scotsman, does that mean that the 'Non Multi-Cultural Dream' is equally fractured?
People will always use religion as a defence for bad behaviour - that does not equate with the notion that multi-culturalism is either a 'dream', or that it is damaged by isolated incidents like this.
All it needs for this situation to take place is for one Muslim man to appear to be connected to one Sikh woman, and for one other Sikh man to act in a way which he believes reflects the tenets of his faith.
How that fits in with 'the Multi-Cultural Dream' is frankly beyond me.

I think AOG's point is that when you've got different cultures that hate each other living cheek by jowl, this kind of thing will happen. I don't think it's particularly valid though. This is just a disgraceful barbaric thug who got off very lightly with a 10 year (actually 5) prison sentence, for assaulting his own daughter.

From that, I suggest he is neither peaceful nor honest.

One of the best ways to understand each other's culture is to keep on talking. our government could start by ensuring that all official business in this country is undertaken in the official language of the nation, ie English (and Welsh, west of the Severn).
permitting every minority group to use their own language (just look at the recent pictures of signs outside certain Birmingham schools) is just divisive.
