we should follow suit all over UK but what I find remarkable is that smokers are so selfiush that they'll gas their own children rather than wait for a cigarette.

I think you have answered your won question TTT, although it is sad that legislation has to be put in place to force people to act sensibly.
But perhaps smokers are not as sensible as non-smokers....after all they smoke in the first place don't they ? How sensible is that ?
This legislation is long overdue and its nice to see Wales ahead of the pack as usual !

I am 62 next birthday. In my lifetime I have seen smoking go from being thought glamorous to now being seen as stupid.
When I first started smoking at the age of about 14-15, nearly everybody I knew smoked...parents, Parish Priests, Teachers, Doctors, and sportsmen.
A slightly older contemporary at my Comp. in Swansea was Merve the Swerve ( Mervyn Davies for the non-cognoscenti ! ) His photo was everywhere along the corridors at school, and he was a big hero, him being probably the greatest No. 8 that Wales ever produced. But he was a life-long smoker and died of lung cancer in 2012. I quit smoking in my mid-20's...if I hadn't I wouldn't be here now, of that I have no doubt whatsoever.
Until recently, every Pub and cafe in Wales stunk of smoke and all the tables had overflowing ashtrays on them. Just going to the Pub for an hour meant that you had clothes reeking of cigarette smoke for the rest of the day.
That situation has now changed out of all recognition and legislation has played its part in the change. I welcome this new move and would hope to see it reproduced in other parts of the UK as well.

Welshyorkie...many people said the same as you, when the ban on smoking in public places came about a few years ago. And yet now, wherever you go in Wales, even in the roughest areas, you see orderly little knots of smokers standing outside Pubs, sometimes in the rain. Who would have thought we would see that ?
If most cigarette addicts stop smoking in their cars with their kids, then the new law will have achieved something. Lets be brave and pass the law and then see what happens !

I'm with you 100% Mikey - as an ex smoker as well, I detest the smell of the things and cannot abide walking out of shopping centres and into a cloud of smoke. I see plenty of people smoking whilst they have children in the car up here on Anglesey, and the sad little faces looking out from the back windows. Maybe they should be charges with causing grievious bodily harm?
When I was young, we lived in London Welshyorkie, and used to go down to Dartmoor for holidays. In those days, it took hours to reach Devon from North London on the A303, and my little brothers and I used to dread the journey, sitting in the back of Dads Austin A35. The drive was long and boring and Dad didn't stop anything like as many times as we would have liked, for us boys to pee !
But what really made the journey more horrible was that Mum and Dad smoked the whole way !
I too feel sorry for all those little kids you see cooped up in smoke-filled cars. Poor mites...I know just how they must feel !
