I have been in the local out-of-town retail park and asked the totally brown (possibly asian muslim) staff why all the TVs on display were playing sexually provocative music videos, to be told it was 'company policy'. many Asian communities round this area genuinely believe they are allowed to follow sharia law rather than English law.
We continually hear stories like this – it’s nothing new. The NHS have bent the rules to allow Muslims to cover their arms, thereby putting the health of patients at risk, and we had a discussion on here a few years back after a pharmacy assistant refused to serve contraceptive pills prescribed by a GP to a customer for a medical condition - that action supported by the industry regulator, the General Pharmaceutical Council. All of that is unacceptable. People can believe what they like, but they have no right to impose their beliefs on anyone else, or to inconvenience anyone else. If Muslims feel unable to fulfil the requirements of the job they shouldn’t be in the job.
I agree with TTT on this.
How could that worker ever have served at the checkout outside Ramadan.
Also, what he is claiming is cobblers...handling and selling pork or alcohol products is not forbidden in the Koran.
I think...and this might rile some people, that this story simply shows that there are jerks in all walks of life.
I would not have used the self service checkout. I would have demanded the store manager get someone to serve me.
Furthermore, just like the Christian registrar who refused to perform CPs, and the Christian Relate councillor who refused to deal with gay couples, if this chap refused to do part of the job he is employed to do, he should be sacked.

Yep...exactly. I'm sure he refused to serve the customer, but perhaps the story has been mis-reported, because either a) as a Muslim he would not serve alcohol/pork products *all* the time, or b) he is refusing to serve all food and drink because he's fasting.
But the combination (as reported) doesn't make any sense.

//it must be a moral dilemma for catholic checkout staff in chemists when someone wants to buy some condoms //
no I was thinking of sweet wine was out because it looked and tasted like communion wine and also unleavened bread ( if they stock it )
[favourite tipple of choir boys but dont let Father catch you !]
and just think of the Holy commotion if they stoked and tried to sell bottled holy water !

It shouldn't matter what time of year it is, if they are working on a checkout they should not refuse to sell a customer anything. Why do Muslims seem to think they have special exemptions? The employer should tell them what is required when they start work and if they cannot agree they should be refused the job.
just read it again and it makes no sense at all unless he a) always refuses to serve pork and booze. or b) he refuses to serve food at all in Ramadan, in either case he should not be working at the till in a supemarket but really I can't decide if the Mail has warped this story or the worker and his boss are incredibly silly.
