I'm a big fan of Davies, as I think he does an intelligent job on the Today Program, but I am nots sure if he is tough enough to replace Paxo. Personally I would have liked to see Eddie Mair front Newsnight. Mair has proven that he cab be very tough when I needs to be, as well as urbane. Here he is calling Boris a "nasty piece of work" ::::

I'm a bit of a fan of Evan (I've read most of his published books - makes modern history interesting to me...at last), but I have never seen him as a heavyweight political interviewer. I find him more interesting in a kind of David Attenborough way - I would have thought (health permitting) that Andrew Marr would have been a better choice...or perhaps Kirsty Wark?

Paxo was a one-off and would be almost impossible to replace.
That said, his replacement could grow into the role and he doesn't hold back on the tough questions on his radio programme.
The only other person who could have replaced Paxo in a proper rotweiler role would be the fair haired guy who does the BBC Hard Talk programmes, whose name escapes me at the moment.
