I can understand the fear and anguish of an 80 year old coming home to find a robbery in progress and then being assaulted- absolutely terrible. I can understand him firing in self defence if there was a skirmish, what I can;t understand is him shooting someone in the back as they ran from his property after they had said they were pregnant and were very obviously...

He will be lucky to also escape a charge! Not entirely sure how I would react in the heat of the moment - on my land.I wouldnt have a gun to hand mind!

They broke into his home, attacked him, breaking his collarbone,
lucky only one of them was shot imho.
If she hadn't been doing what she was doing she wouldn't have been shot.
Who could forget the Tony Martin case? Hope the 'real' victim in this case is not charged but he has some explaining to do.
Burglars take their chances when the break into someone's home. They're the lowest of the low. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever.
That's how US law works, though. Guns are legal through the Second Amendment, as is their usage in legitimate self-defence.

Crimes against the person, such as mugging and burglary, are considered much more serious than they are in soft Britain. The burglars had already inflicted a serious, though admittedly not life-threatening, injury to the victim, and any court in the land would I'm sure adjudge that he genuinely feared for his life and was perfectly entitled to use deadly force to protect himself.

As stated above, the young man should consider himself lucky that he at least is still alive.
if this man has performed an abortion, he'll be in big trouble with the right wing.

They're the lowest of the low

You're kidding, naomi? Burglars are worse than muggers, child abusers, murderers, terrorists, bankers?
No, I'm not kidding, jno - and neither am I saying they're any worse or any better than the rest. They're all the lowest of the low.
if you say they're the lowest of the low, you are saying they're worse than the rest; that's what "lowest" means.

If you seriously believe that a burglar is as bad as Jimmy Savile, I can only register my strong disagreement.
I know what lowest means and I mean what I said. They're all the lowest of the low.
I notice that the article used American spelling for "defense" and "cooperating" but anyway, how can a claim of self-defence be used when the woman was running away? In this country, reasonable force can be used but if the threat no longer exists, if the assailant is running away for example, the victim cannot chase after him and beat him up.
If she hadn't been there she wouldn't have been shot - enough said as far as I am concerned.

In the Land of the Free, thecorbyloon it looks as if they can ! Its a license to assassinate as far as I can see. And her accomplice cannot possibly be guilty of murder, if somebody else had the gun. That person has made no secret of the fact that he killed the woman. We proved that point in Britain a long time ago.....let him have and Derek Bentley.

I must say that I am surprised that so many on here are defending the man who killed this female burglar.
"In this country..."

Irrelevant.

Boto...I hope you never go to the States on a holiday and get shot because there was a trigger-happy twit nearby....after all, you will be dead and he can say whatever he likes, and get away with it.
Mikey "I must say that I am surprised that so many on here are defending the man who killed this female burglar."

The fact that she is female and that she was pregnant are totally irrelevant.

But, the fact that she was a burglar and also that she posed no immediate threat to the householder are relevant.

Mikey, but I hope that I would not be invading someone else's home.
Mikey, this man isn't a trigger-happy twit. He's the victim of a brutal assault perpetrated by people who broke into his home with the intention of robbing him.
Volenti non fit injuria some would say....
what I found distasteful was the man's apparent glee. delight. at having killed a person running away from his property.
