Yes selling off the Council houses was a good thing but not replacing them was a disaster, I just cannot see why it was not allowed. I mean sell them build more, sell them, build more etc means many more home owners(statistically more likely to vote Tory) and presumambly many more affordable homes to buy or indeed let out. So yes, as a fan of MrsT I am compelled to acknowledge this blot.

Hi NJ- yes, if they built a lot more council houses/flats it would cost a lot (although it may boost the building trade and create jobs) but in time it would help reduce the welfare bill because we could move people from expensive privately rented accommodation where landlords know the state will pick up the bill whatever rents they charge.
Some considerable savings could be made in the following areas NJ ::
Why pay our dole queue construction workers dead money from the welfare budget when we could be paying them proper wages for working ? That goes for most people of the dole of course.
The same goes to material suppliers.
Why give eye-watering amounts of money to private landlords, instead of it coming back into the public purse in the way of council house rents ?
The construction industry needs some help and assistance to get out of the doldrums and I can testify personally to this as I have two brothers employed in the business.
There is a huge log jam in the housing market and this would be the ideal way to help sort it out. It would also go a long way to stop this ludicrous house price inflation, which benefits nobody in the long run. By making affordable housing available across the country, it should also make our workforce more mobile. Some development money might be needed to start it off but that is usual in any large civil engineering project.
But much more than money is needed and its political will that is missing.

Thanks TTT, for your translation and your honesty. Don't you agree that a large scale council house building program would be in everybody's benefit ?
I keep repeating this but it really not a party-political affair...everybody needs to get involved in some kind of cross-party consensus on the issue.

Yes I do agree but it needs to be coupled with other measures. When I was a kid it was normal for working people to live in l houses. Now days it seems that council estates are little more than reservations for the unemployed and unemployable. We need to get them back somehow, we need to get hard working people to want to live in council houses and estates. I don't know how that will be achieved but I do agree that the councils should be building and letting again, as they did in the past. Is there anything actually stopping them building now?
Yes Mikey, we were immigrants in Spain. Retired and self sufficient, bought our own house, paid out taxes, including a 'wealth tax' imposed on other EU citizens who had homes in Spain, which incidentally was declared illegal by Brussels - never got it back! I could write a book on the tax avoidance measures and scams the Spanish got up to. The other two countries, Germany and Hong Kong) were on fixed contracts by husband working for British Government.
There's been huge growth in the construction industry in the past couple of years but many of the job vacancies have gone to EU migrants. Further growth will mean an added attraction to more EU migrants not fewer building workers on the dole.
The answer to dishing out huge sums to private landlords is to cut Housing Benefit to a sensible level. Some of the building workers currently on the dole may then be persuaded to take a job rather that languish at home knowing their rent will be paid for them. A fundamental change in attitude is required.
Yes I do know the second reason for the housing shortage, sp. Too many people. There is not a shortage of housing in fact, there is a surfeit of people. Until that is acknowledged and the economy adjusts to having fewer people these problems will never go away.

And I agree with you, 3Ts. I lived in council accommodation as a child and they were fine places, mainly working people from all walks. My neighbours included police officers, nurses, accountants and lorry drivers. Few were unemployed.
Today most council housing is “accommodation of last resort” and that will not change because we have too many people here who see such accommodation as their first resort. Those numbers will only increase.

TTT....I agree that we need a different kind of council estate than we have now, perhaps the kind of estate that we grew up in. But unemployment is major factor in the downgrading of any area. There is no point in tackling one area of our society, and ignoring others. Joined up thinking is needed.
As to what is stopping Councils from building, I confess that I am not sure. But the great post-war housing boom can't have been achieved council by council. There was political will from the top, and that is what is missing now.
It is often said that there is little different between the main two parties these days. I don't agree with that in its entirety but have to admit that it has the smell of truth about it. I would like to see the Labour Party sticking its neck out on the issue and making more council housing a central part of its manifesto. Then there would be a real choice that voters could make.
Of course, the Tories could also do the same !

Todays immigrants (jungle peeps in Calais) are quite different to 1950s intake & asians from Kenya thrown out by despotic Idi Amin. These had required qualifications of their entry.
Immigrants in the 'jungle' dont have passports, let alone any proven skills. We cant home them just coz theyre from war zones as we dont have the space. Lots of them come from big continents to live on this lil island.

mikey4444 Would you take your grandchildren down into an immigrant ghetto and tell them go play with the nice boys and girls? They would not be let in let alone make friends. this is reverse racism if that exists. A lot of 'immigrants' are third generation who keep their own customs and laws, don't allow their children to integrate and live in closed communities. new Immigrants -thanks to the E.U. come over to work and send money back over to their country of origin either to parents or to save to 'go back and buy a house'. They make no contribution to the British economy as many are on 'self-employed status and pay no tax, many work under the radar living in squalor and being taken advantage of, though still making 3 or 4 times as much money as they would in their own country. You do not have to be Racist to want Immigration under control, in fact tighter controls would result in better working conditions for those who managed to get through, those that has skills the UK needs. Tighter Immigration controls and making White British fat lazy work dodgers do the menial tasks these workers come over to do would solve a lot of problems. That's why I'm voting UKIP and not afraid to say so.
But how will voting for a party that has no hope whatsoever of winning the next Election, or any Election in the foreseeable future, help to stem the influx of immigrants ? Voting for UKIP to stop immigration is akin to peeing yourself while wearing dark trousers...you get a warm feeling but nobody else notices.
I have asked this UKIP question before and nobody has yet to answer...I hand the baton over to you !

Q. Which immigrants are you talking about? Asians, West Indians? Africans? It's best to be quite distinct when assigning attitudes to entire demographichs. Growing up in South London, I saw more division across football lines or music lines, rather than race.
2. A lot of 'immigrants' are third generation who keep their own customs and laws, don't allow their children to integrate and live in closed communities.
I don't know whether that's true. Again, which non-whites are you referring to? Incidentally, what's wrong with immigrants holding on to their own customs?

You are not thinking about how the economy works. Even if they sent all their salaries back home and don't pay a penny in tax, they are still benfiting the economy.
They still need to eat, they still need to pay for goods and services, and so those service provider benefit from trade

No - you don't need to be racist to want better immigration control. But I would suggest that picking out white British layabouts is a actually racist in itself.

I will vote UKIP to try and get bums on seats in Parliament. I'm under no illusion they will be in government in the next 10-20 years but a growing presence of MP's will make small steps. If the UKIP win seats from Tory strongholds, which is more likely than them winning Labour seats, then if the Tories win the Election they may have to consider tweeking their stand on Immigration -in fact, soon after the unexpected rise in the popularity of UKIP last year David Cameron announced he was going to attack Immigration 'Head On'
