I don't doubt for a second that these poor people were desperate - but they had already made it to safety in Europe BEFORE they got into the container and lorry. According to UN rules, you must claim asylum in the first safe couintry you get to.

I must admit I always have had the belief that a person entering a country illegally, when discovered must be taken without delay before a magistrate and dealt with immediately. On the basis only of yes, welcome or, No and returned from whence they came.

There seems little voice from the young over this, but it is their future that is at stake, the elderly already have a roof over their heads, no children of school age, and are retired so do not need work, although it is true that we may need the services of the NHS from time to time.

I can't really see the distinction somehow. It makes no sense to risk your life like that if you are already in a "safe country"
I am not defending their actions necessarily, but this conceit that people would kill themselves to get to Britain rather than stay in France is ludicrous. If we don't look at the bigger picture we have little chance of solving the problem.
