I wouldn't let a 9 year old loose with felt tip pens let alone a semi automatic machine pistol!!

You have to wonder about the thinking where any parent assumes their child needs to be able to fire an Uzi at nine years old.

It does seem to be part of the American psyche that the 'frontier' mentality still exists, and they seem to feel that everyone having a gun makes everyone safer.

My stance is the same as Ben Elton's - you simply say to each citizen - Would you like to own a gun? Every citizen that answers yes is then automatically prevented from ever having access to a gun, ever.

It won't happen, and that is why tragedies like this will continue.
Well sort of easy to say in this overcrowdd country where you are never far from Plod or someone else.

The US, in many States, is a totally different kettle of fish. Guns are needed to survive (not from other humans) so surely best to train youngsters how to operate rifles and hand guns safely.

What puzzles me in this case though is; why an Uzi?
Andy; and what does every citizen say to a Bear or a snake?

9 year olds should be learning road safety, stranger danger and how to swim, not taught to fire notoriously difficult to handle, snub barrelled machine guns.

It is beyond belief.
youngmafbog - if you compare the instances of American citizens who die as a result of interactions with nature because they did not have a gun, compared with their interactions with each others' guns, you will find that your argument vapourises before your very eyes.

You cannot seriously suggest that because some people living in rural America may (and I stress may) need to possess suitable firearms for defence against animals, that this justifies the notion of teaching children to shoot guns.

Why be puzzled about the make and style of weapon - shouldn't your pusslement be directed at the notion that a nine year old needs to go anywhere near a gun and ammunition, much less be handed one?
or lipstick...

chilldo - I am aware of your antecedence - BUT you have also to know that being ex-army in the land of the free doesnt seem to engender a respect for arms and other weapons

odd that....

compare Jarhead and Commando School....
what puzzles me is why YMB is giving us his wisdom about carrying arms.

Firearm deaths/y in the land of the free: 10 000

all murders in UK 560 - and the relative size is 60 m compared to 200m

the rate from wiki is 0.04 to 3.6 ( per 100 000 per y )

which is almost exactly a factor of der daaah one hundred
YMB I wonder if you can work out which way round it is...
Is there a standard 'youngest' age that youngsters are taught and, as has been referred to, why an Uzi?

Whatever, aged 9, is absurd. Can such an aged person truly understand the responsibility of handling a weapon? Completely different to remembering any sequence of instructions on discharging a gun.

A terrible accident and I wonder about the psychological damage to the girl who will now probably need a more appropriate 1 to 1 attention.
Darwin award for someone ?

Charlie Vacca would be a good start...
Youngmaf, a gun is no defence against a bear, and not necessary against a snake. Aliens ...possibly.
No, I don't think they will, the NRA is such a powerful organisation and whenever the Government proposes gunlaw changes, the 2nd Amendment is trotted out, the "right to bear arms". Is any other country as hog-tied by 18th Century legislation as the USA? The people who fought in the Revolution and framed the Constitution never intended, I'm sure, that a 9 year old would be allowed any weapon or that many teenagers would take weapons into school to murder their schoolmates. Until there's the political will nothing will change.
I still shudder at being in the checkout at a supermarket and seeing the two otherwise sane looking young people casually carrying guns on their belts.
Any of you that are shouting me down ever been in hillbilly land or similar?

Fancy being up against a rattler or a grizzly with your bare hands? I suspect neither go anywhere near your armchairs.

All I said is dont compare our lifestyle to some parts of the US. It is not comparable. Compare NY or San Fran etc fine, but you do need to be more aware of other peoples surroundings.

Guns are used for more than direct self defence. Cattle and crop protection for instance.

There is no excuse for an Uzi - and I said that (but of course the right-on ignored that bit) but surely being able to handle something and understand it is far better than a child picking it up. Curiosity killed the cat.

//Youngmaf, a gun is no defence against a bear// Really ? I reckon an Uzi would sort it out well and proper. What planet are you on?

Such a tragic story. This could have been so easily prevented - don't hand a 9 year old child a gun!

Not only has this man lost his life, but the child involved will have to live with what happened for the rest of hers. In my opinion, she was far too young to be handling a gun, and far too young to have to deal with the consequences.

His family must be devastated by this.
Col and Jess I noticed the apposition of a nine y o shooting her instructor [ " but I didnt mean to, Paw " ] and the other thread about the swearing three year old.

Perhaps it would make a good viddie having the 9 y o spray lead at the fella ( Charlie for it is he ) and then the 3 y o saying " oh f me, who did that ? ! "

maybe the bears are armed with AK47s YMB?
In Amerikee, YMF is completely right....of course... again
you need a gun to protect yourself from gun-toting 9 y olds ....
damn you 3T got there before me !
youngmafbog - " ...but surely being able to handle something and understand it is far better than a child picking it up. Curiosity killed the cat."

Surely not having guns where children can pick them up is better still?

Your argument that educating children about guns is safer than simply not having guns is not going to fly - as the posts pointing that out verify - and the absence of any agreement with your point.

I mow my lawns with a petrol mower. In the wrong hands it is a lethal weapon.

My nine-year-old grandson may be tempted to have a go with it, and lose fingers and toes as a result.

So, do I 'educate' him in case he is curious?

No, the mower remains padlocked the shed when not in use, the keys are hidden and he is expressly forbidden from going anywhere near it because it is dangerous.

I can't see that my argument could not be extended to guns - except of course that I don;t have the need to have a gun in my home, and I diposute that 99% of Americans really honestly need one - as opposed to wanting one, which is an entirely different argument.

Guns kill people - that is what they are designed to do. So keep them away from people who don;t have to have them, and keep them away from children full-stop.

How does that sound?
