UKIP did not have a candidate in Clacton in 2010, so how can they measure a swing to them?

It is too early to predict the result of this bye election. Other than Carswell we do not know who the other candidates are.

We do not know what gaffes UKIP will make during the campaign.

We do not know how Carswell will fair under media scrutiny. He was the archeitect of Elected Police Commissioners for example which have been widely discreditted.

I will wait and see before making a prediction.

I hope so too.

There needs to be a clear choice for the British electorate. And UKIP gives them that. I would encourage those who believe in UKIP's to vote for them at the next General Election.

It would make politics more interesting. It might also mean that right wing voters could leave the main parties to promote a more centralist ideology - which for me personally, would be extremely attractive.

I will await the outcome of the party's annual conference then. And a clear explanation of the overall effects. I just can't get my head around people voting for a party who can't even say what the income tax rate is.

But UKIP did not stand in 2010. So if UKIP are so sure of winning the forthcoming by-election, why did they not field a candidate in 2010 ?

It seems obvious that if Carswell does win, its his own popularity that will tip the balance, not the popularity of UKIP in the constituency.

They may win in Clacton, but they are not going to win in May 2015, so any chance of putting any of their Manifesto promises into action is zero.
