Will close the port unless the UK does more and helps cover the cost of illegal immigrants.

I'm sorry but isn't this a case of NMFP? He needs to get legislation changed in his own country, whereby the illegals are returned to the nearest port in Africa.

Surely if the French are building a camp for them it means that they have aknowleged their responsibility for housing them and all that that implies.
// "Close the port"

Would Brussels allow France to do that?

Oh I see it is only when the UK breaks the EU rules, that all hell breaks loose.

But on second thoughts, perhaps it is the best thing that could happen, and while they are at it, the Tunnel could be filled in also. //

Well said AOG.
If the authorities came across an overladen boat half awash and in danger of sinking what should they do?
Sandy, you have obviously and unsurprisingly never crossed the Straights of Dover in a small boat. It is a bit like the nautical version of the M25 during rush hour, to cross the first shipping lane unscathed would be surprising to cross the second a b1oody miracle.
Ok. So the advice for people hoping to reach the promised land in a small craft is, 'Don't try that'.

I think the mayor (ess) of Calais is actually a she not a he !!!
Just thought I'd throw that worthless piece of info in but I suppose it shows she has'nt the balls to close the port or the authority !!
"If the authorities came across an overladen boat half awash and in danger of sinking what should they do?"

Firstly, do not make too much of an effort to "come across" them.

Secondly, if they do, let nature take its course. Sorry to be harsh, but if the European nations continually pluck these people out of the drink and go on to feed, clothe and house them the problem will not only persist but, as has been adequately demonstrated, continue to worsen.

As I have said before the numbers involved here are such that southern Europe (and, courtesy of the ridiculous Schengen agreement, all the rest of the continent) is under invasion, nothing less. A hundred thousand people have landed on that tiny island so far this year. Many of them have had their boats helped into the harbour by the Italian navy. The Italian authorities (some of whom are "proud" to see the area as a haven for migrants) then assist their passage into France and on to that country's northern ports.

The boats should be taken into tow and returned to north Africa. Unless some really serious action is taken to stem the flow Europe might as well charter a few ships and bring them here in a little luxury.

Has it not been proven that when pressure is applied, the French have all the resistance of a luke-warm Kit Kat?

Do the Illegals come over as Foot passengers then?
They also will grass up any resisting and harder kit kats to the authorities.

If illegally and without threat of persecution in ones own country, then absolutely.
There's asylum for those who are supposedly persecuted, which they are supposed to seek in the first safe country they enter.
Perhaps Madame Mayoress should be reminded that it was the Brits and Americans as well as all our gallant allies who spilt a lot of their blood to regain those Ports in France in order that she and her ungrateful country people don't speak German now. How much more does she think we owe her ineffectual country?

Remember the Vietnamese boat people who came to Britain, it must have been one hell of a row for them.
Perhaps we should be grateful for this date,

January 7th, 1558.
True, or we would be buying them £3m homes, a brand new motor flat screen mobile and everything else in Calais!

And if we refused the EU and the ECHR would be down on us like a ton of bricks.
They didnt seem to mind us in the early 40s.
They were happy to have our men going to their shore then!
One of the main reasons the refugees don't want to stay in France is that it is nigh impossible to get a job unless you speak fluent French, whereas as long as you can convince the UK authorities that you are alive you are assured of shelter and perhaps eventually a job.(in social services).
