Well Scotland can get away with it but England can't simply because we are always accused of being "Little Englanders" or even "Fascists" if we try to promote a little Engishness.

Why even the word England is fast becoming a dirty word, that is why it's citizens are called 'Brits' who live in 'Britain', which seems strange really since the last time I looked at an atlas the country England was still there.

You only have to look into the last century to see the results of excessive nationalism....Germany twice, Japan, the Balkans etc, etc

Stop trying to pass the book sandy, wasn't it you who chose to miss the word black? So it seems it is not I who has tender sensibilities regarding that colour but you yourself.

Excessive nationalism:

"I love England. It's a wonderful place with beautiful scenery. I just wish we were allowed to emphasise our individual characteristics. Instead we have to be known as "Brits", not English otherwise we're branded racists, Little Englanders and xenophobes"

Non-excessive nationalism:

"I love Scotland. It's a wonderful place. I just wish those b*****d English would pee off, leave us alone to get on with it, stop persecuting us, let us have a share in the UK currency, a share in the infrastructure built when we were part of the UK, a share of all the assets built up over 300 years of partnership, none of the debts and all of the oil."

I don't know, SP. One might say that nationalism becomes excessive at the point where it asserts that its culture and values are better than those of others, an attitude which could be construed as elitist and even fascist. What do you think?

I'd describe an example of excessive nationalism as rejoicing and revelling in the headline 'GOTCHA' with not a thought for those who were 'GOT'.
