Anybody on here would like to hazard a guess why it has taken 21 months for this Inquest to get started ?

It was postponed for a second time last year "as the coroner had sought more information." Very strange, though.

The Coroner didn't train in South Africa did he ?
There was some problem/delay with the Australian Broadcast Commision.
I can't see why there as to be such a high profile inquest, the nurse had made a mistake by not adhering to the proper procedures, and which played on her mind so much that she unfortunately took her own life.

If Royalty had not been involved this would not have reached the national press.
Keith Vaz got involved...say no more!
I agree with you AOG although of course if Royalty weren't involved it would never have happened in the first place. It was just something that went horribly wrong and will have scarred a few people for life, not just the poor woman who was obviously just prone to worrying and couldn't bear the stress of it all.
I always wonder why they open an inquest and then adjourn it straightaway.

Poor woman and her family. She must have had other problems. This isn't worth taking her own life over.
Perhaps it took a long time to get started because they were looking for what else might be wrong with her.
I presume the authorities have to wait until reports from a number of sources are completed before an inquest can begin. I detest practical jokes and the mindless practical jokers who think they're funny. They so often cause unhappiness to the victim - and in this case senseless tragedy. Poor lady.
I agree, Naomi. I detest practical jokes. They are nasty and not remotely funny. I can't imagine why the Aussie DJs thought their listeners would be entertained by this. I take back my previous comment. This seems to have been enough to send Jacintha over the edge.

A senseless tragedy yes, and completely avoidable. But I still can't understand why it taken nearly 2 years to start the process of the Inquest.
Her family is not being best served here.
Mikey, as I said, probably because in order to make a sound and valid judgment, the court has to wait for all the reports to be completed and all the information to be accumulated, processed, and assessed. That would include medical reports, police reports, witness statements, etc., etc.
Question Author
But that should have been done in a few weeks or perhaps months. This smacks of lawyers dragging their heels, in order to make money. Not unusual when dealing with lawyers of course !
It would seem that the random event of a practical joke call being taken by someone who had allegedly attempted suicide before was a very tragic accident.
The coroners duties are

find out who has died
when and where the died
and that they died from

It is inquisitorial and not adversarial and interested parties dont have a right to ask witnesses questions but can with the coroners permission

he doesnt send a summons - he "warns"
and if you dont obey a warning he has the power to direcct a p'liceman to arrest you and bring you to his court

I think he wanted some australian witnesses and the ozzies said yes and then no...
No Mikey - lawyers not really involved here
because of the inquisitorial nature of the enquiry

all directed by the coroner

people do hire lawyers for an inquest
esp if they have had a warning
but basically it is all in the control of the c

Question Author
Thanks PP...so it looks as if its the Ozzies that have been dragging their heels...shame on them. I wonder why ? I wasn't aware that there were any dispute about what happened ? After all the DJ's did admit, very publicly that they were sorry for their actions.

I don't suppose you would have watched any of these TV shows then?

Beadle's About

Candid Camera

Game for a Laugh

Just for Laughs

Off Their Rockers

AOG, of those I only know Candid Camera and Beadle's About, and the answer is no, I didn't watch them. Tried it once and didn't like it. There's nothing funny about moronic idiots trying to worry or embarrass people.
no, I liked that sort of thing when I was young but cant stand them now.
