I would be particularly interested to hear the opinion of those who supported the Christian B&B couple who refused a let a room because of their religious convictions.

Were Sports Direct right to sack this security guard?

If so, why?

Me I think is was totally right to remove this guard, as this is *competely* unacceptable.

However, I believe there are some people who think that shops and service providers should have free will...

So...is there anyone who agrees with the actions of this guard?

And if so, why?

Yes...you could say "I don't like the cut of your jib" without breaking any law.

But if you said, "I don't like the cut of your hijab", you might be on shaky ground.

sp - I think you are missing the point

the guard was acting without authority / ultra vires
following orders is a defence against being fired ( obviously you have to SHOW etc )

If I went into Sportd Direct and someone said no Roman Catholics .....
I would immediately say does your manager know what you are doing ?

Firstly, it's obvious that he should have been sacked.

Secondly there's no correlation with the christian B&B incident. They owned that business and as such erroneously believed they could run it exactly how they liked without regard to the laws against discrimination.
They also took that action because of religious beliefs.

This guard was just a paid racist muppet who contravened the policy of his employer.

Ludwig...I agree. I am not sure why this story has been hijacked by the Cornish B+B story. Your last sentence says it all. Just a racist bigot who thought his uniform would protect him.

I am just a bit confused here.........a group of Jewish two of them were barred from entering the store.

That is not anti Semitic........surely?

There must have been some other reason that the guard had recognised as unacceptable.

Morning Sqad ! I don't think you are missing anything here. It appears that this Security Guard made a decision to bar these children purely based on their religion. There doesn't appear to be any other factors involved. There is no indication that their behaviour was in any way an important factor.

sqad, if the guard actually said "no Jews, no Jews", it would be safe to assume he barred them because they were Jewish. I'm guessing the guard was either a miffed Muslim or George Galloway doing his part-time job. ;o)

Assuming the Guard had an accent, foreign, regional or racial, could the sentence have been misheard? If he said 'Not you' or 'not youse' for example, that could have been misheard as 'no Jews'.

Personally, I think a slap on the wrist and a bit of diversity training (which I presume he hadn`t received) would suffice.

I too would like to hear the Guards story. School children are sometimes not welcome in shops, because of the danger of theft. Its not unusual to see signs on corner shops saying " Only two children allowed at a time"

But his widely reported words, ie "No Jews, no Jews" is rather difficult to understand if he was concerned about shoplifting. Sports Direct stores are a shoplifters dream....very crowded and easy to steal from. They would also attract schoolchildren as the goods on display is their sort of thing.

But there doesn't appear to be any other indications, other than what has already been reported. He allowed some children in but not these two.

Unlike the cozy, middle-class world of tribunals and compensation which many on here think universal, common folk can be, and are sacked at the drop of a hat, sans explanation.
