In his "sod you lot, I'm off" speech, Alex Salmond says ...

"For me as leader my time is nearly over, but for Scotland the campaign continues and the dream shall never die"

The campaign continues ??

Until the minority ... have imposed their will upon the majority ...

Mmmm ...

Places where that has happened in recent history ... thinks, thinks ...

The majority have spoken. But, frankly, we don't care about the majority.

If the SNP have any sort of power in Scotland, they rule as a party who have expressed contempt for the wishes of the majority.

That is only ever a bad thing.

Surely the difference is, johnamill, that the Govt purports to represent the wishes of the electorate.

The election just decides which party is chosen to do so.

The ruling party can still say that they have authority to govern because ...

(and here's the punch line)

... more people support our view than anyone else's view.

But with the SNP, a majority supports a diametrically opposite view.

I voted NO but fully understand why another person would choose to vote YES. I have to say that posts like this (and others) make me feel that there is much anti-Scottish feeling in England (not Wales) and yet it the accusation is usually that we hate the English.

If this carries on perhaps next time, and there will be a next time, the vote will be 100% YES.

Certainly not me. My boyfriend is Scottish.*

But I think the Scottish people deserve more respect from their politicians.

If the Scottish people vote NO, the leader should say ... I accept your wishes, and I am going to act accordingly.

Rather than ...

I do not accept your wishes. I am going to try to make you all change your minds.

The Scottish population are not stupid. But the SNP treats them as if they are.

*Actually, he's Swiss, but the principle is the same.

I think he meant "we'll keep on with the campaign, because in a few months' time, you wait and see, those promises will be pie in the sky and you'll wish you've voted for independence". Well, he might be right, but equally - he might be wrong.

I like and respect Alex Salmond, he led his party with one goal in mind. It was such a decision to make - on the day I made the cautious vote.

Remember that there are Scots everywhere (my brother lives in Nottingham) ~ we are merely taking over the world be stealth. THIS is the plan B.

Surely no different from any political aspiration or party: you don't give up necessarily just because you lost a vote. The important thing is that he acknowledged the result but he's hardly going to say" Ok, we're going to pack up and abandon all talk of independence ever again. That is all for the future.
I don't support the SNP but they are the majority party in Scotland so they will continue to form the government there until the next election. I can't see what the problem is (plenty of other problems of course but that's a separate matter)

Speaking of statistics, I'm fairly certain that 100% of the pro-Trident people here have never been to Faslane. I'm also willing to bet that it would take around 24 hours for them to locate it on a map. Hear from you all tomorrow night :-)

no, just till the majority dies. All the polls showed that the No vote was strongest among older Scots; younger ones voted Yes.

Changing demographics are part of the democratic process (not to be confused with dictatorship).

Ma sister said she would have voted No and she seen the tv coverage but even she was swearing at the tv near the end because of the results and she feels sorry for Salmond after all the effort he put in.

Although it's been said there'll not be another vote for a generation, there's nothing in legislation to say that.

Looking at the legislation that was passed following the Belfast Agreement, any votes on Ulster leaving the Union must be at least seven years apart so that would be a good starting point.
