As predicted, Police all over the UK are now overwhelmed by the work involved in investigating child pornography. In this time of savage cuts to Police budgets, how will they cope with this hugely growing problem ? Children are at risk here, after all.

Of course it's feasible. Those who do it as part of their job, whether police, social workers, or charity workers, receive the appropriate training, and there's no reason why capable volunteers can't have the same. People aren't usually thrown in at the deep end as you were, andy-hughes. Take it from me.

I, and my colleagues were selected by Microsoft on the basis of evidence of our ability to handle such issues - but I would never in my wildest dreams have volunteered for such a task.
You run the risk of attracting anyone from the morbidly curious down to the vigilante and the pervert - seriously dangerous in my view.

The reason that the attachments to the relevant divisions are so short is that it was found that officers were found to be suffering from PTSD.
It's not as simple as glancing at the harrowing images. Each picture is studied in great detail to glean as much information about the child-victim, the abuser and the location.

As I advised, my task was simply to locate evidence that a site was being used to send images for download, which only meant me finding one image, and then clicking off it and advising the address. That meant I saw the images I saw for maybe three or four seconds each, but that was more than enough to burn them permanently into my brain - as I advised, i can remember then clearly years later.
If i thought I had to examine such images in detail day in day out, i would, I am sure, be curled up in a ball in the corner sobbing by the end of the second day.

Paedophiles are seriously clever and computer literate. Any hint that their sites are compromised - and that is what a simple check would do - and they shut down and move like they were never there.
In order to bring a case to court, the evidence of circumstances such as location and participants needs to be investigated, and you cannot do that with a simple glance.
I suspect that Jack knows of what she speaks, either by direct experience, of by knowing someone with that experience - I am inclined to take her viewpoint on this.

It is - but it's not enough to collect necessary criminal evidence such as locations, identities of victims and perpetrators, which are required to bring a case that will hold up in court.

The National Crime Agency also use specialist volunteers for high end crime investigation and the Child Exploitation & Online Protection is part of NCA.
See attached link, obviously you would have to join the Special Constabulary at this level but that would only probably be to extend your powers.
