SandyRoe - "Isn't the niqab a garment of modesty? If a woman who usually wore one was teaching children what would be the need for it?"
If a woman chose to wear it, she would need to be veiled in front of any man who was not her husband.
My wife is currently in Abu Dhabi working as a Schools Inspector.
While she is in the classroom, the women teachers and girl pupils remain unveiled, but if a male member of staff needs to enter the room, he must ring a bell from outside the door and wait a moment while all the ladies and girls put their veils on before he can enter.
Such is the custom of some women of Muslim faith.

/// These constant links to the 'sensational revelations' by The Daily Mail are really tiresome, ///
If they are so tiresome then don't bother reading them, nobody forces you to, but perhaps then you would not have the opportunity to have a cheap dig at myself.
/// dished up daily by 'anotheroldgit' for what reason I can't imagine. ///
You want a reason well the fact that the Daily Mail is not afraid to highlight such things, but to those who would rather bury their heads in the sand and pretend certain things are not taking place and also don't want others to know, I suppose it does hurt their feelings.

Sorry Andy - I didn't get back to the thread yesterday but in answer to your question - I am not profoundly deaf but only hear about 15% in both ears but even so I totally depend on lipreading but because I have been dependent on it I am extremely convincing in that a majority of people do not realise or understand I am so deaf. I have also been asked to think of a cochlear implant by my audiologist but at my time of day I have declined. JjCon
PS - All my life I would have gone into panic-stricken mode if I saw a mouth covered.

Khandro, intellect does not equate to common sense. If this man really were thoughtful, he’d think rather more seriously about this issue – and the same applies to you. Strange that where religion is concerned, criticism is automatically deemed unacceptable. Why, even Mikey, usually a very vocal atheist, is howling his discontent. Hard to contemplate that not so long ago he said this ……
//This is just another made-up religion, just like all the other made-up religions that we already have in the world. All religions are the irrational belief in illogical circumstances...this one is no different. To paraphrase John Lydon, "Religion is a black hole, ready for ignorant people to fall into"//
Not much respect to be found there. I can only imagine he’s experienced a sudden epiphany.

Naomi...you are now verging on being offensive.
I am indeed a militant Atheist but I think to make personal attacks on an ex Archbishop of Canterbury is extremely disrespectful. Debate his opinions by all means but there is little point in calling him names. I am sure that there are people that don't agree with you and I don't always either. But its just offensive to score personal points. Debating issues, not standing on the sidelines yelling offence is the way forward. I was never bright enough or lucky enough to go to Oxford but I am sure that your kind of attacks on Rowan Williams would not be allowed in the Oxford Union Debating Society.
