indeed..RIP
Couldn't agree more TWR.
RIP.
Yes indeed, their deaths were totally unnecessary, as were the deaths of those children in Pakistan. We live in an evil world.
I'll probably get a bashing here; however, I think that these "blanket" statements such as "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends in this hour of tragedy" are absolutely meaningless and as trite as a waiter uttering "enjoy" when he/she serves you a meal, or a store clerk parroting "Have a nice day". We don't know the people who were killed, and we don't know the families, so how can our thoughts and prayers be with them? It's akin to dumping loads of flowers and stuffed toys at certain locations. This, TWR, is not directed at you personally, just the general trendy conception of saying something just to say something.
Stuey..it is called human compassion....neither did I know Mother Theresa or Princess Diana , but I was saddened nevertheless when they passed away...
stuey....I could not agree more.

However it makes the person uttering them feel ................."concerned."
stuey, incidents like these don't just affect the immediate families of those involved.
They are a reflection of the society of which we are all a part and as such it is natural to be saddened by such bad news. I am not grieving for those who have been murdered but I am able to feel for those who are. Those of us who believe in prayer find it natural to pray for the those who are suffering, whether we know them or not.

not at all Sqad..it is possible to feel sadness for someone's demise..whether or not you knew them.....I would, for instance, feel sadness if you popped off !
I was saddened when my parents died; when my sister died; when some of my friends died; when my pets died...Princess Diana and Mother Theresa? I merely read about those incidents.
murray......yes....I know you would...;-0.....but there would be plenty who wouldn't.

However....stuey is not asking you to be saddened, that would be natural, but his concern is for the language used........

\\\\Those of us who believe in prayer find it natural to pray for the those who are suffering, whether we know them or not. \\\

That i understand.
then maybe I am a particularly good Christian Stuey..? as I do most certainly feel sadness in my heart for others....
But surely we can feel sadness without proclaiming it can't we?
indeed, but if an expression is asked for , I see no wrong in doing so !
Stuey I agree with you. It doesn't mean we feel nothing for whichever unfortunate people involved in the latest tragedy, just feel it's pointless. Write to the people concerned by all means and offer comfort but on here, for me, it's pointless.

Dive ..nobody is talking of bright lights....merely expressing sadness
one can add the deaths in Pakistan

and yes altho I am not a child nor a parent, I can still feel terrible at these needless deaths
quite Peter.. another example of a complete tragedy and loss of young life needlessly...very very sad
Stuey, if you equate a waiter saying enjoy to expressing sympathy with a meaningless death then I feel sad for you too.
