I have to admit to being a bit shocked that Nicola Sturgeon would act as a witness in Scotlands first lesbian marriage. I think that is inappropriate surely she should be impartial I think her decision to stand as witness is fundamentally wrong there is no mention that she is a friend of the couple just the fact that it is the first and she is first minister

Misjudged publicity stunt?
I don't see where partiality comes into it
She is being impartial - she's attending a ceremony that occurs every day between couples.
I think it's quite appropriate and shows the human touch that she's attending such a momentous and historic occasion.

Well said Zacs Master
I agree with Chill.
I didn't state anything Geordie. I asked a question.
Not sure how it's a publicity stunt as they asked her, she didn't invite herself willy-nilly.
Fantastic.......gays.....lesbians.......now "in fashion"....AND...probably a vote winner.
Why should she be 'impartial'.....and what is your particular definition of the word?

I'm not convinced that I'd want any sort of Politician at my wedding, unless they were friend or family, but the couple concerned must have been happy for her to attend theirs.
I have no problem with a politician attending a wedding. Many have done so in the past, and many will do isoin the future.

I cannot see how it affects impartiality in any way.
And, if having been asked, she refused ?

I can just imagine the headlines .....

Personally I think this is a non story. It's just another wedding.
I have to admit to being a bit shocked by you thinking her acting as a witness is fundamentally wrong. Can you explain gordie?

Like her or loather her, she has as much right to play that role as you or I do surely.

Jowly Eck wouldn't have done it. I wonder if we're being sent a coded message. ;-)

To be impartial to what?

It's a wedding...they are legal. There are people who are for marriage equality and there are people who are against it. For her to remain 'impartial' she would have to refuse all further wedding invitations (gay or straight) during her term of office.

And what would that achieve?
If she knew any of the participants ,then fair enough. If not then it smacks of a publicity stunt.
Not exactly 'the crime' of the century, politically....but no doubt a lot of hot air will be issued over this, wit here. In short, it's irrelevant to the governance of Scotland.
Scotland: Putting the gay in Gaelic for 2015. :-)
//Fantastic.......gays.....lesbians.......now "in fashion"....AND...probably a vote winner. //

the labour party tried that in the 1980s. it didn't work; a disparate collection of minorities will never add up to a majority.
Its a public display of support (call it a publicity stunt) and endorsement for the new equality law.
Happy Hogwomangay, Douglas....
