Why did it take Britain so long to sort out the farce with Abu Hamza when America has dealt with it so efficiently?

Because we are slaves to "Yuman Rites"

I noticed in one report he was complaining about the "spork" he has to use and was wittering on about his Yuman Rites being breached in the U.S. He will get nowhere with his complaints over there.
I hope they put his food in a bowl on the floor and he has to eat from it like the animal that he is
The UK will not extradite anyone to a country which still has the death penalty.

It took years to get reassurance's off the US that he would not be killed after the verdict.
....and in the meantime his very large family are still living off benefits in this country. Well, apart from a couple of his sons who are in prison
good spinning, gromit. That would have been a 'given' before extradition was mentioned. MrsO hit the nail on the head.
Svejk,
I know you like to put down Britain and its legal system at every opportunity, but I am afraid the facts are against you on this one.

Hamza was dealt with successfully in this country. He was charged with 16 offenses in 2004 and was duly sentenced to 7 years prison.

if the Yanks had assired the Home Secretary immediately, Hamza could have been on a plane to the US years ago, the day his UK sentence finished. As it was, they made it difficult for themselves, and made it easy for Hamza to fight extradition.

The blame for the drawn out extradition lies solely with the US. But don't let that stop you from Knocking the British.
Because the Government has not got the *** to say this is the UK, we make the law feck your H.R. we will deal with it our way, on a point, another Loud Mouth Pratt in the Mirror this morning get's away with mouthing off about the UK, what is the Government going to do with this Pratt, spend another few million on Court Costs? a bullet comes to mind.
// good spinning, gromit. That would have been a 'given' before extradition was mentioned.//

I dont think you understand the extradition process Scweik - or else I dont

Officials pass forms to each other
and I dont think there is a tick box: " and you wont cut his head off will you ? " for the foreign govt to solemnly tick before it All Goes Thro

I dont even think there is a process of: " do you have any evidence that X has done what you are saying he had done ? "

- the terr' we sent to Jordan after we concluded a TREATY that the Jordanis wouldnt pull him apart with wild camels or whatever on conviction was acquitted on NO evidence ! oops !!

There IS a tick box for 'is this a crime in both countries ? ' though

TWR, you are advocating assassination of people you don't like? Where have I seen that put into practice recently?
.. and punishing the family for what the transgresssor may have done

priddy Stalinist ( now THERE was a world leader ... ) if you surrendered to the Germans 1941-45 your family ended up in Siberia
Read the Mirror Jno, make up your own mind.
Without having to look it up, i'll guarantee that not one person has been extradited from this country to face the death penalty since we abolished it over 50 years ago.
Yes, PP, you are right. You don't understand it.
They do NOT sit down with a blank piece of paper and start cobbling an individual extradition treaty on it. Various criteria will be set in stone. And topmost, I would imagine, is no executing anyone we send to you.
So the very idea that it took a long time to extradite him because the Americans wanted to fry him, as put forward by Gromit, is, frankly, laughable.

D'uh! Of course not, because the law forbids us extraditing to countries with the death penalty. Except where we get assurances.
topmost, I would imagine, is no executing anyone we send to you.

Not so. As I read the treaty, an assurance has to be provided, where required, for each application; there's no permanent assurance in place.
jno, //TWR, you are advocating assassination of people you don't like?//

I think you’ve misunderstood TWR’s post. He’s not advocating the death penalty for people he doesn’t like – he’s advocating it for enemies of this country.
Svejk

Here is a link to your bible. Rather contradicts you statement that it was laughable.

// US may drop Hamza death penalty request
The United States may be prepared to drop its request for the death penalty against radical cleric Abu Hamza, it has been reported.
The radical Muslim preacher is facing 11 charges in the US including hostage taking and trying to create a terror training camp in Oregon. //

Gromit

/// D'uh! Of course not, because the law forbids us extraditing to countries with the death penalty ///

Then why did you say that held his extradition up. It's not on the table, it's non-negotiable. Yet you're claiming it took years to get the Americans to agree to it. Use a little bit of common sense, will you.
Well done for finding that, even if it was in the Daily Mail.
I'm afraid it's full of 'it has been claimed' 'it was reported' which as I'm sure you're aware is journo-speak for 'we've just made this up'. You are funny.
Svejk

You are disingenuous. I wrote

// Except where we get assurances. //

We got an assurance off the US that the Death Penalty was not a prospect. When we got that, the extradition went ahead.

You wriggling to blame the British for this is embarrassing.
the UK courts were happy with the US assertion in 2007 and authorized the extradition on the 15th November of that year.

Abu Hamza arrived in the US on 6th October 2012.

What happened to the intervening 5 years? clearly that had nothing to do with any US demand for the death penalty.
Stop digging. It was never on the table for the Americans to give us any assurances. And anyway, we agreed to extradite him in 2007 but he, with the help of a legion of human rights lawyers, spun out a series of appeals till 2012. At no stage have I blamed Britain for this(more your style). I agreed with mrsO that the blame lies at the door of Ooman Rights lawyers who have made a fortune out of this vile creature and are, doubtless, great heroes to you.
