Plain Packaging For Cigarettes...at Last !

We should have got rid of all those pretty, shiny, silver and gold boxes years ago, so its well overdue. ( I know TTT will be cheering this morning ! ) The tobacco lobby has had the upper hand for far too long.

If pictures of rotting teeth and lungs are going to appear on the packets, as is mooted then it doesn't qualify for the description "plain packaging". Why can't they say what they mean ? Is it deliberate ?
It's more to avoid attracting new potential addicts that trying to get the remaining hard core addicts finally quit.

When I was a boy in the 60's, most adults I came into contact with smoked.
Mum and Dad, Aunties and Uncles. You could smell the cigarette smoke coming from the Teachers study in the school, long before you walked past the door. I had an Akela in the Cubs that taught me my knots, at the same time as he smoked. It wasn't unusual to see an ash tray on your Doctor's desk. Every Pub, Cafe and restaurant had overflowing ashtrays on the tables. Trains had "Non-Smoking" carriages, instead of "Smoking" carriages.
Am I the only man on here that can recall being given a cigarette advertisement as a birthday or Xmas present, in the form of a JP Special model racing car ?
We were told that if cigarette advertising was stopped, sports such as Cricket and Formula One would collapse overnight. I can't seem to see any evidence of that happening !
In 1948, 82% of adult men smoked. The latest figures I can find is for 2013, and that figure has now fallen to 21%-23%, a tremendous drop by any stretch of the imagination. It is still a problem in the lower socio-economic groups but even here, the incidence of smoking is falling.
How has this been achieved ? Well, it hasn't happened by just sitting back and saying ...
" well, nothing will deter smokers, so whats the point of trying ? "
To suggest that this new move won't have any effect of smokers is disingenuous, and flies in the face of common sense. Advertising works. That is why the tobacco industry used to spend eye-watering amounts of money on it, and they still do in the third world.

My point in all this is that at every change in the legislation of smoking that has occurred in my lifetime, it was always said " it won't work" but smoking is now very much of a minority habit here in Britain. The banning of advertising must have been a significant factor in the demise. Colourful and attractive packaging is now the only way left for the tobacco industry to promote its products and to leave it in place is just madness. All the evidence and surveys that I have, say that plain packaging is widely popular, amongst most people and all political Parties.
What a pity that the industry lobby has tried to prevent every move to curb its activities, although hardly surprising.

Ummm...yes of course they advertising a brand, but its not a brand of Cornflakes or toilet paper...........its cigarettes !
Most cigarettes are made by a small number of tobacco companies. As long as people continue to smoke, what difference does it make to companies like Phillip Morris International if you one buy one of their makes instead of another ?

I think there are more kids these days NOT starting smoking as its not as cool as it used to be. We were watching the news this morning and my teenage son was genuinely surprised that 'kids' started smoking as 'everyone knows its really bad for you' . I think the message is getting across -the days of staring seductively across a bar,cigarette in hand, are long gone,and this latest development in marketing cigarettes will help even more.
