hooliganism has been an issue for fifty years and there are a variety of things that can be done - identify the hooligans and dob them in to the Police or ban them for life.
Shrugging and saying o well really this is a difficult issue but the issue is not mine is NOT the answer here

Soccer itself isn't but a significant minority of its supporters quite clearly are.
What I have never really understood is the difference between football and rugby. I can't remember any incidents of naked racism in rugby, other than the usual banter when it comes to the home internationals. England came down to Cardiff recently and Wales went to Scotland, without any racism issues whatsoever.
But both sports have a lot in common, so why does racism occur with football, on occasions, but never with rugby ?

because Gareth thingy's mum would hand bag them !
This has been noticed for er around 50 y as well
they included Cricket but drunk hooligans refuted that a few years ago
The explanations plucked out of the air include different sets of men who like rugby and constant social pressure NOT to misbehave
In 1965 at Gigg Lane someone said ( 14 y o ) said he had wandered too near the the visiting fans buses and got hit
and us other 14 y o ( in shorts and school caps of course ) wondered why violence was an acceptable activity for a football fan.

you can handle the ball in one
and handle someone else's ... I mean kiss them when they score in the other.
// you can't stop them being racist. This was on the tube, not in the grounds.// yes you can... you can stop people breaking the law by punishing them if they do so
there is no point in shrugging and saying this is far far too difficult....

Could it be a subconcious reaction to paying all that money for tickets to see eye-wateringly expensive 'star players' fail to perform and get a result,
Possibly even that there is no condemnation of their players from managers or team owners when said players act violently, insultingly or blatantly cheat leaving fans with the idea that all's fair.
They're not all noted for their deep thinking remember.

Is football not a microcosm of society at large, at least from a narrow viewpoint ? These men that display naked racism are just reflecting their social background and the way that they have been brought up.
After all, racism is hardly unknown in Britain in general is it ? Perhaps its just a lot more visible at public occasions, like football matches ?

// Peter...what? Are you insinuating that I think they should go unpunished?
//
noop I am saying they should be and that was why I wrote earlier:
"there are a variety of things that can be done - identify the hooligans and dob them in to the Police or ban them for life. "
and I wrote that because I thought they should be punished and not that I thought they should be let off
sozza if it were unclear again
