Anyone wearing a face covering including Muslim women wearing niqabs or burkhas must show their face at the airport. This can be to a female official in a discrete way.

So we're made to take off our shoes, coats, hats, empty our pockets...yada yada, and people can through wearing a Burka?

The one in front of me only had her eyes checked to see if they were the same colour as her passport, nothing was removed. I felt nervous the whole flight as she sucked everything through a straw without showing her lips.

No,it's not the case. The woman in front of us last trip had to go to a side room and show her face to a woman official. The husband was kicking off, but she had to do it.

That old chap was detained for hours because they waved through burqa clad women and when he got to the head of the queue they demanded he remove his scarf.

Were these young girls facing, at some time in the future, the prospect of arranged marriages with men they didn't know from the sub-continent? Perhaps the chance of avoiding that set them on the path to ISIS.

There was a feature on the TV this morning about the use of social media (eg Facebook) in recruiting young women - they are led to believe that marrying a jidahi and supporting the regime will bring them nearer to God. Depends, I guess, on how much "in the real world" they are, but apparently hundreds of young women from the UK are now in Syria for this (what we see as) misguided purpose.

More power to them, I say. If someone started a fund to pay for their fares it would be oversubscribed. I'm not accustomed to wasting money on charidee but I'd certainly subscribe to that one.
