Because we are not all the same colour and being able to represent yourself as something close to what you actually look like is a good thing. Why should a black or Asian kid have to be lumbered with a Caucasian emoji and vice versa?The blanket use of blue eyes is a bit odd though.

I am intrigued when I buy hosiery or lingerie that is described as skin tone, just whose skin tone they are referring to and why they seem in many stores have a one shade fits all policy.

Apple are a world wide company. Recently they earned more overseas than in the American market. They are particularly concerntrating on the Chinese market at the moment. So the expanded emoji set is their attempt at being more inclusive, more a global and less parochial white American
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook is gay and they take diversity very seriously.

Apple reckon that being diversity will not do them any harm financially, in fact it will help them sell more iDevices.
