ymb...The Savile Report published today is nothing whatsoever to do with vigilantism, and its evidence is completely and utterly damning.

It's not weasel words Mickey to question the misuse of justice.
As you well know (which I am sure is why you wrote it) my gut instinct is he is guilty as heck. However that has been based on what I have been fed by the media. Are you really happy that the media should have so much power?
And even a report is one view. The CPS often make a report but the person is found not to be guilty.
So a question to you Mickey. Do you think we should do away with trial by Jury if it suits us?

What "misuse of justice" happened today, when the Report was published ?
When the BBC and every other news Media in Britain report the conclusions of this long and thorough official enquiry at Stoke Mandeville, they are not going through a process of "trial by Media"
What would you rather have the Press do......ignore the publication of the Report ? Perhaps you would rather the Enquiry had never taken place, or it it had, that the Report should have been kept secret ?
The monster that was Savile may now be dead and thank God for that, but there are plenty of people left that could be brought to trial over his crimes at Stoke Mandeville. He got away with what he did because other people allowed him too, and these are the people that now need to answer for their actions.

ymb...nobody is suggesting the Enquiry and Report was meant to take the place of a trial. But if we don't have Enquiries after events like these, how are we to learn from the past, so that these kind of things are not repeated ?

The Report quite clearly outlined what Savile had done and how he got away with it. It also contained recommendations on changes that should be made, so ensure as best as possible that it doesn't happen again.

i) At the time of initial setup, the NHS couldn't afford the full costs of the spinal injuries unit.
ii) Savile's charity supplied the bulk of the funding.
iii) Perhaps because of that, he started to act as if he owned the special unit.
iv) From that point on, he began to behave as he pleased. Nobody can tell tales against the big cheese who pays the bills, can they?
Like they always say, "follow the money".
